Huawei Honor Band 4 review
By Felicity Rosa 2019-05-15 1818 0
It's not the biggest Honor Band 3 start so it may not be suitable for anyone who bought the tracker when it was released in 2017, but there are some improvements that could affect you.
We had time to try the Honor Band 4 in an event in London, where it was announced along with Honor 8X, and we can expect that we will have a complete review of the tracker in the coming months.
Huawei Honor Band 4 release date and price
The Honor Band 4 is officially present in China since September, but it's the first time we've heard of it in the UK.
Now we know that it will come soon for those in the United Kingdom, but at the moment we do not have an exact date. Furthermore, it has not been confirmed if it will be sold in the United States or Australia.
It's a cheap tracker that costs less than Huawei Band 2 Pro did at launch with a price of £ 59.99 (about $ 80, AU $ 110).
Huawei Honor Band 4 visual design
The Honor Band 4 design is not very different from the last tracker. It has a long, narrow screen - more on that in a flash - with a home button below it. This is all inside a rubber band that you can replace, but currently, there are only silicone options for extra straps. You have the chromatic choices of blue, black or purple, but we think that the last one is closer to the rose in the flesh. It's the one pictured in this review so you can judge for yourself.
The dimensions of the tracker are 43 x 17.2 x 11.5 mm. It is comfortable to wear and we barely noticed it on the wrist at 23g. The strap itself seemed pretty safe, but it's not the safest we've ever seen on a locator.
This is not the ugliest fitness tracker we've seen on the market, nor is it the most attractive; it is exactly in the middle when it comes to looks. If you are looking for a piece of fashion, it is unlikely that you want Band 4.
The Honor Band 4 display is an improvement over the Band 3 with a 0.95-inch AMOLED, and for the first time on an Honor fitness tracker, it's a color display. This makes a big difference when you browse your statistics.
It's not a vibrant display like the one you find on the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro, but it looks good at a quick glance to see your information when you're in the middle of a race or a cycle.
Fitness is probably the reason why you will buy this tracker and you will be happy to know that it can also monitor step counting, heart rate, and sleep. It can also monitor swimming as it is water resistant up to 50 meters.
Honor band 4 features and fitness
It can monitor some swimming sections, including freestyle, frog, back, and butterfly.
If you are looking for a top-end racing partner, you will not get statistics that you like and I hope that Honor releases the Band 4 Running Edition that we have already seen in China.
This special edition tracker features metrics that include cadence, ground impact, and stride length and tracks them using a 6-axis sensor. The honor has yet to confirm whether it will arrive in the UK, and so far it does not seem confident that it will be.
There is no GPS on the Honor Band 4, so you will not be able to track your position. Many cheaper trackers implement the connected GPS that uses the phone to track your position during your workouts, but this doesn't even have that. It's a bit of a disappointment.
The band can follow the race and the cycling inside and outside, as well as the free training and swimming mentioned above.
There is also sleep detection, but exactly how much detail they will be able to provide are not currently clear.
You can receive phone notifications through the tracker, but these seemed limited during our short tests. We will be sure to review them further in our full review.
An interesting element is that Honor Band 4 allows mobile payments even if it runs the company's software. At the moment we don't know how mobile payments will work on Band 4, but it may be necessary to sign up for a separate service.
If so, we expect few banks to support the Honor Band 4 at launch, but we won't know for sure until later on the line.
Honor band 4 battery specs
This won't give you the best battery life we've seen on any fitness tracker, but with an official Honor estimate of around two weeks, we expect the Band 4 to last much longer than you probably need.
With two weeks of battery life, you should be able to bring the Band 4 to bed at night and you shouldn't worry about recharging it while catching a dirty look. We hope that it allows you to make the most of your sleep tracking features.
The battery itself is a 100 mAh cell and we are happy to check it correctly to see how long it will last during our complete overhaul.
Anticipated Verdict
The Honor Band 4 is not a major update on the company's latest fitness tracker. Mobile payments are a nice addition, but at the moment we don't know how it will work outside of China.
The truth is that there is little to be excited when it comes to fitness tracking. At first glance it seems to be very similar to Band 3, and we are sorry that there is no Connected GPS function for those who want a little more from their wearable.
That being said, the design is nice for a fitness tracker around this price point. If you are looking for a barefoot fitness band at an affordable price, the Honor Band 4 may be right for you.
