Huawei Honor Magic 2 review: six cameras, notch-less display and lots of AI

By  GB Blog Official 2018-12-05 807 0

Officially released in China alongside the Honor Watch, the Honor Magic 2 joins the recent line of smartphones that have gone past the notch to achieve the highly sought after 100% screen-to-body ratio. The Honor Magic 2 sports a large 6.39 inch display and a sliding mechanism that hides and reveals its front cameras, of which there are three. What more does the phone have to offer? Let’s see.

Huawei Honor Magic 2: cutting edge design with sliding cameras

The Huawei Honor is a rather big phone — it measures 6.19 x 2.96 x 0.33 inches — and most of that real estate is taken by the phone's screen. The 6.39 inch display is the highlight of the model, both in terms of design and performance. There are no visible bezels on the phone — and this is the point. In order to get rid of the bezels, Huawei have opted to place the front cameras on a sliding panel that will mechanically bring out the selfie shooters when you need them, quite reminiscent of the Oppo Find X and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 (even though there is no telling who came up with the idea first). The question that comes up here is one and the same — how reliable is the moving mechanism and will it make the phone more vulnerable? According to Huawei, the phone uses five different tracks to bring the cameras out and the butterfly mechanism will click into place when the camera panel is out.

Another feature of note is that there is no headphone jack on the Magic 2 — the phone comes with just a USB-C port — you will thus need an adaptor or a wireless headset for the audio. Alternatively, you can take a look at the Honor's new wireless FlyPods Bluetooth Earphones.

The Honor Magic 2 will be available in three classic gradient colours: pink, blue and black.

Huawei Honor Magic 2: not two, not four, but six cameras

There is a reason why the Honor Magic 2 needed a special sliding panel for its cameras instead of housing them on a notch: there are three cameras on the front of the phone and three on the back. The selfie shooter on the Honor Magic 2 is a 16MP triple AI camera with a 3D intelligent deep lens. You get a 16-megapixel primary lens and a pair of 2MP lenses for support. The front cam boasts professional portrait lighting ability and supports 3D facial recognition — which means that you will be able to make full use of 3D Qmojis.

On the rear, you also get three cams: a 24MP monochrome lens, a 16MP RGB lens and a 16MP ultra wide angle lens. The cam is capable of identifying over 60 object categories and hundreds of scenarios in real-time — plus, it uses semantic image segmentation to make adjustments according to the scene. The cam comes with artificial image stabilization to make clear handheld shots and stable footage possible. The 17mm wide angle lens allows to take in more of the background and tell a complete story in a shot.

Huawei Honor Magic 2: what's under the hood

The Magic 2 runs on the Kirin 980 and its dual-NPU AI, the same processor that's powering the company's other two flagships — the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Overall, it's one of the strongest processors out there duly noted for improved graphic recognition speed and a smooth performance during multitasking. You will be able to choose between 6GB or 8GB of RAM and the storage space of either 128GB or 256GB. Unfortunately, you won't be able to enhance that externally with an SD card.

There is a 3400mAh battery onboard supporting 40W 'SuperCharge' fast charging, which will be able to charge your phone's battery up to 50% in just 15 minutes and to 85% in just half an hour. The fast charging feature also adopts high-voltage-and-low-current design accredited by TÜV Rheinland. The downside here is the absence of wireless charging, which is present in a number of other flagships this year.

Huawei Honor Magic 2: notch-free display and with security features

Naturally, the phone's large bezel-less display is one of the prime highlights. The screen measures 6.39 inches and comes with 2340 x 1080 resolution and, with no bezels, the phone comes exceptionally close to the 100% screen-to-body ratio.

There is a lot of functionality hidden within the screen as well. First, there is the 3D bionic sensor within the phone's front camera that is capable of identifying nearly 10,000 facial features and is used for facial recognition to unlock the device. There is also the optical in-display fingerprint sensor that will stay hidden until you touch the screen. Once you do, it will activate and let you unlock the phone with just a quick touch. Thus, you get enhanced security features — but they are both hidden inside the phone's expansive display.

Huawei Honor Magic 2: Magic UI 2.0 and more AI

The Honor Magic 2 runs on the Magic UI 2.0, which is based on Android 9 — so you will get the familiarity of Android interface with some tweaking from Huawei.

One of the most noticeable tweaks is the AI assistant by the name of YoYo. Described by the company as a "pocket butler", YoYo is a mix between an encyclopedia and a smart calendar — but as the phone has only been released in China, the services of the assistant as well as the interface will only be available in Chinese (at least, for now).

AI will also come to your rescue in the moments of weak mobile coverage. When in an elevator or in the subway, the phone's AI will come into play activating pre-programmed modes to adjust to the network situation. Additionally, thanks to the dual SIM dual VoLTE (DSDV) feature, you will be able to stay online while talking on the phone or playing games.

HUAWEI Honor Magic 2: the verdict

The Honor Magic 2 is not a budget smartphone coming at $912.9. For that price, it pretty much brings together all of a flagship's must-haves: you get the huge display, a cool sliding mechanism for your selfies, enhanced camera performance and AI assistant. The negatives (for some) would be the absence of the headphone jack, lack of wireless charging support and, most importantly, the fact that the phone and its AI assistance are currently only available in Chinese.
