Honor Play vs. Honor 10: notch friendly designs

At the first glance, the two smartphones are quite similar in design: especially, since both of them have taken the path to the bezel-less display through the infamous notch. Then again, the devices are quite a bit different when you take a closer look.

the designs of Honor Play and Honor 10

The Honor 10 is quite a bit smaller than the Honor Play: the former measures 5.89 x 2.8 x 0.3 inches while the latter is 6.22 x 2.93 x 0.3 inches.

The Honor Play comes with a unibody metal design, sports a rather sizeable notch at the top of the screen and features on-screen navigation buttons. On the back, there are vertically placed cameras and a fingerprint sensor.

The Honor 10 also has a notch at the top of the display (though smaller) but does come with a physical home button and an in-glass ultra-sonic fingerprint scanner. On the back, there are horizontally placed cameras and LED flash. Both phones have a USB-C port and a 3.5mm headphone jack for connectivity.

Neither the Honor 10 nor the Honor Play are water or dust resistant — so, getting a proper protective case will be quite a sensible decision.

Honor Play vs. Honor 10: bezel-less screens

The phones differ quite a bit in the display department.

The Honor Play sports a 6.3-inch IPS LCD display panel with a Full HD+ screen resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. The pixel density is 409 pixels per inch and you get the aspect ratio of 18.5:9. It may not be the sharpest display on the market, but it is a very decent offer for the price range.

The Honor 10 comes with a slightly smaller 5.84 inch screen with the resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels with 19:9 and the pixel density of 432 pixels-per-inch. Because of the higher pixel density, the display on the Honor 10 can be said to be slightly better. Then again, with the Honor Play, you get more screen space, which is often preferable for gaming, watching media, web browsing, etc.

Honor Play vs. Honor 10: under the hood

The Honor Play is powered by the Qualcomm's Octa-core Kirin 970 SoC clocking at 2.36GHz. You also get the GPU Turbo tech capable of enhancing the phone's graphic performance by up to 60% while reducing the power consumption by about 30%. There are several memory and storage options with the base one coming with 4GB RAM + 64GB storage whereas the top one sporting 6GB RAM with 64GB of storage. Both variants support memory expansion via MicroSD. The phone also comes with the 4D haptic engine for an even more immersive mobile gaming experience.

The Honor 10 also sports the Kirin 970 chipset but there is more RAM and storage. You can get the smartphone with either 6GB RAM + 64GB of storage or 4GB RAM with 128GB storage. But there is not expansion via the SD card.OS-wise, you get the pre-installed Android Oreo with EMUI 8.1 layer over on both devices.

You will also be able to take better selfies thanks to the 24MP front cam. Both cameras have been enhanced with AI capabilities namely intelligent scene detection.

On the battery side, we've got the 3,750mAh built-in battery on the Honor Play. Plus, the phone comes with the support of Huawei's SuperCharge tech letting your shorten the amount of time spent on recharges. The Honor 10, on the other hand, comes with  a slightly smaller battery cell of 3,400mAh.

Honor Play vs. Honor 10: the verdict

In more ways than one, the Honor Play and the Honor 10 are more similar than they are different. Same powerful processor, same OS, similar storage and memory offerings and not a big difference in price: the Honor Play is available on GearBest at $319.99, and the Honor 10 is $372.99.

With that, the phones set different goals. The Honor Play is, primarily, a gaming phone. Thus, the bigger screen, larger battery and a whole set of other game-specific features and enhancements. The Honor 10, on the other hand, is your more "everyday" mid-sized phone with a better set of cameras.
