Huawei Honor V20 review: a punch hole display and a high-end CPU under the hood

By  GB Blog Official 2019-01-02 3759 0

Huawei’s popular sub-brand, Honor, have recently released an interesting flagship, the Huawei Honor V20, featuring Huawei’s top of the line Kirin 980 SoC and a peculiar punch-hole camera design. The phone is definitely a sight for sore eyes for those who are tired of notched displays, but what other features are hiding under the hood?

Huawei Honor V20: 91.82% screen to body ratio

Probably the most interesting thing about the Honor V20 is the phone's solution for a bezel-free display. Instead of the much hated notch or its teardrop version or even the mechanically sliding out camera like on the Vivo Nex, the V20 opts for a new punch-hole look. There is a small hole in the top left corner of the display hiding the phone's selfie cam.

The display itself is 6.4 inch 1080 x 2310p (Full HD+) IPS LCD screen. Plus, the V20 sports some of the highest screen-to-body ratios on the market — over 91%.

On the back, the phone does not handle things conventionally either. There is a colorful gradient glass panel with a V ornament that changes color depending on how the light hits it. Here, you will also find the phone's fingerprint sensor.

Unlike a number of recently released smartphones, the V20 has kept its headphone jack. The phone is charged by a USB Type-C cable.

Huawei Honor V20: high-end Kirin 980 processor

What makes the V20 stand out on the inside is the Kirin 980 SoC, a high-performance mobile AI chipset running on the 7nm process — the same as found on the Huawei Mate 20 series. Together with the powerful processor, you get either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. As for internal storage, you will be able to choose between the 128GB and the 256GB options.

Huawei have long followed the trend of packing large batteries into their flagships, Huawei have gifted the V20 with a 4000 mAh battery and 22.5W fast-charging support. Unfortunately, there is no wireless charging onboard — which we would definitely expect on most smartphones coming out in late 2018.

Software-wise, the V20 runs on the Android Pie-based Magic UI 2.0 (Chinese version), but will be also available with the standard EMUI 9.0 (international version). Other interesting features include GPU Turbo 2.0 and Link Turbo for seamless smooth between WiFi and LTE.

When it comes to connectivity, the smartphone supports Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, Bluetooth 5.0 and supports 4G/LTE on two nano SIM cards.

Huawei Honor V20: 25MP selfie shooter and a 48MP rear cam

As we've mentioned above, the V20 features quite an interesting front camera placement — the phone's selfie shooter is located in the punch-hole like opening in the top left corner of the display. The cam itself is 25MP with f/2.0 aperture capable of 1080p video recording at 30 fps.

On the back, there is the an impressive 48MP lense paired with a TOF (time-of-flight camera).

3D camera. The 3D cam (thanks to the support of the powerful Kirin 980 chipset) enables advanced body shaping and will let you take full height pictures. Plus, you will be able to create 3D animations and enjoy 3D motion games in full. The cam comes with an LED flash, HDR and Panorama modes.

Huawei Honor V20: price and verdict

Should you get the Huawei Honor V20? It's definitely an interesting option amid the latest arrivals — especially if you are looking for a full screen experience but are not a big fan of notched displays or think that the pop up camera options are too limited to consider.

In addition to the interesting design, the phone does come with rather strong specs:

High-end Kirin 980 octa-core Soc

Full HD+ 6.4 inch IPS screen

4000 mAh battery and 22.5W fast-charging

48MP lens + 3D TOF cam on the back

25MP selfie shooter

How much is this going to cost me — is probably what you are thinking right now. And the news here is not bad either. The Honor V20 is not a low end device but it falls neatly into a spot closer to the top of the mid-range category — the phone's starting price is set at about $530.
