London would obviously also have been a candidate for the big presentation - after all, Huawei unveiled his Huawei Mate 20 there last year. However, Huawei may also want to distance itself from the Anglo-Saxon region this year - after all, they are currently clinching import restrictions with the USA. The two new smartphone models, the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro, are to be unveiled in China at the same time as they are introduced in Europe: According to our source, an event will be held in the metropolis of Shanghai for this purpose.
Huawei Mate 30: main design and specs
There is still a lot of speculation about the improvements of the Mate 30 next to the new Kirin 990 chip, which will be unveiled at the IFA in Berlin on September 6th.
As we learned, the Mate 30 will have an improved display with a refresh rate of 90Hz, like the OnePlus 7 Pro already has and which rumor has it will also be used in Google Pixel 4. While most smartphone screens have a refresh rate of 60 Hz, an increase to 90 Hz should provide a quieter and more pleasant picture.
Furthermore, rumors and first pictures of a so-called "waterfall" design for the screen of the Mate 30 Pro reach us. This would mean that the screen has a strongly sloping screen edge of 60 pixels each on both sides. Compared to normal curved screens, these "waterfall" designs are more pronounced, make for even narrower screen edges when viewed from the front, and also allow information to be displayed on the side of a smartphone.
Huawei Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro: camera and battery
Besides the display, Huawei is also said to have screwed to the camera: According to reports, the quad-cam with four lenses has two sensors with 40 megapixels each. In addition there is an 8 megapixel telephoto lens and a 3D ToF sensor (Time of Flight, depth gauge). This would mean a camera upgrade compared to the P30 and P30 Pro, which Huawei currently needs. According to DxOMark, Samsung's recently introduced grade 10 is currently said to have the best camera in a smartphone - it beats the Huawei P30 Pro by one point and thus recaptures the throne for the Koreans. Will Huawei sit on it?
Traditionally, Huawei will also focus on battery capacity: The current Mate 20 Pro has a comparatively large 4,200 mAh battery. Either this capacity in the Mate 30 Pro will be increased again, or Huawei will find ways to tickle a few more minutes out of the same battery capacity.
Will the Huawei Mate 30 and mate 30 Pro come with Harmony OS?
The most exciting question at the moment is whether the Huawei Mate 30 will still be shipped with Android Q and EMUI 10. Or will it even be the first smartphone where Huawei relies on its own operating system "Harmony OS", which was recently officially presented at the Huawei developer conference HDC. If the latter is the case, the Mate 30 will probably not go on sale immediately after the presentation, at least in Europe, as Harmony OS is not yet ready for the needs of users outside China.
We won't know for sure until September 19th in Munich what of the leaks and rumors will definitely come true. Until then we will continue to evaluate hints and who knows: Maybe we will also learn something new about the Huawei Mate X, the first foldable smartphone from the Chinese manufacturer.
