HUAWEI MediaPad M5 review: media magic on a compact screen

By  GB Blog Official 2018-07-18 8035 1

Huawei are well known for challenging Apple devices with similar designs, enhanced functionality and pocket-friendlier prices. But the Huawei MediaPad M5 is a different story. It’s a powerful medium-sized tablet with enhanced media functionality — and a true treat for gamers and those who love watching videos on-the-go.

HUAWEI MediaPad M5: landscape centered design

The good things about the Huawei MediaPad M5 start right on the surface. The tablet's 8.4 inch is covered with a layer of 2.5D glass — this is a first for a Huawei tablet as this feature is typically reserved for the company's smartphones. Thanks to the 2.5D curve, the tablet's edges are very smooth making it very easy to hold the device with one hand.

You will notice the speaker openings on both the top and bottom of the tablet and the volume wheel and wake button are on the tablet's right side when in landscape position. The fingerprint sensor is also on the right (bottom edge when in portrait mode) and you'll feel the camera bump in the top left corner on the back of the tablet. The controls seem to be placed perfectly, as they are easily reachable but not intrusive when you are handling the tablet. The MediaMad M5, thus, truly deserves its name, as it brings an impressive level of comfort to watching movies and enjoying all sorts of media on a tablet.

Things are quite a bit different in portrait mode, though. The MediaPad M5 features a 16:9 aspect ratio (compared to the 4:3 ratio on the iPad), and working with the tablet in portrait mode may be a bit uncomfortable at first. The button placement (which works so great in landscape mode) feels awkward and may take some time getting used to.

HUAWEI MediaPad M5: stunning media performance

What makes the Huawei MediaPad M5 really stand out is that it is a primarily media oriented tablet. Even though the mini version comes with a rather compact display (8.4 inch compared to 10.8 inch on the MediaPad M5 Pro), the screen features an 82% screen-to-body ratio and a beautiful 2K resolution and boasts impressive color saturation and clarity — plus, thanks to the use of IPS technology, you will have a comfortable viewing experience at any angle.

A great addition here is Huawei's original Eye Comfort Mode, which promises to reduce the amount of harmful blue light emitted from the screen — a very useful feature for those spending a lot of time in front of their tablet screens: watching movies, playing games, etc.

Another media essential that the M5 gets just right is the sound. Thanks to the stereo speaker setup with Hi-Res audio, you get great sound quality to go together with your supreme video experience. Huawei mentions that the speakers on the tablet have been tuned by the acoustic legend Harman Kardon allowing the M5 to deliver a beautiful bass with zero distortion.

Next up on the list of the tablet's media features are storage options. The tablet is available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB and there is the convenience of SD card storage expansion (up to 256GB). This means that you will have plenty of space to keep your favorite media right on the device.

The MediaPad M5 runs on the HiSilicon Kirin 960 Octa Core CPU. Even though this is a last gen processor, it delivers more than enough power for daily use — even with a heavy media load.

The tablet's battery is well equipped for media support as well. You get a 5100mAh battery, which, according to Huawei, will give you 11 full hours of non-stop video playback (provided you have the screen set at 40% brightness level or below).

Seek through the whole pad, you will not find the conventional headphone jack. But there is a USB Type-C to 3.5 mm headset jack adapter cable, so you can still use your wired headphones. Of course, you can also use a Bluetooth headset — the MediaPad M5 comes with Bluetooth 4.2 for efficient connection to other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Another negative is the camera performance: you get an 13MP back cam and an 8MP selfie shooter, which may not be enough pixels for those who love using their tablet for photography. Then again, for those who find the idea of an 8.35 x 4.8 x 0.29 inch camera ridiculous, this may not be a problem at all.

HUAWEI MediaPad M5: is it better than the iPad Mini 4?

While some Huawei products offer a less pricey alternative to Apple products, the MediaPad M5 takes a different road. The tablet is more expensive than the iPad Mini 4: $460 for the M5 (4GB RAM +32GB ROM) vs. $329 for the iPad Mini 4 (32GB). The M5 comes with a larger screen with a higher resolution, a 2.5D curve, and a larger screen-to-body ratio. You get a faster processor, the option to expand storage with an SD card and even a more powerful camera setup.

In short, the MediaPad M5 seems to take the mini tablet idea and raise to a new level. It's a high-level media-oriented product with a good price and a very impressive performance.
