Huawei P20 vs. OnePlus 5T: which one should you buy?
By GB Blog Official 2018-05-04 13598 4
The newly coming Huawei P20 and the P20 Pro, by virtue of their top-ranked DXOMARK performance, are hailed as the best camera smartphones so far. Even compared with iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, the Huawei P20 is still a powerful competitor.
While the OnePlus 5T, famous for its high performance-price ratio, has been one of the most popular smartphones in the market.
But which one should you choose? The following detailed comparison will help you make an intelligent choice.
Huawei P20 vs. OnePlus 5T: specs
Before we get emotional and go through each model's strengths and weaknesses, let's take a quick look at the dry specs as they are.
|5.8 inch LCD,2244 x 1080 px resolution,18.7:9 ratio||6.01 inch AMOLED,2160 x 1080 px resolution,18:9 ratio|
|Octa Core Hisilicon Kirin 970||Octa Core Snapdragon 835|
|4GB RAM + 128GB ROM||6/8 GB RAM + 64/128 GB ROM|
|Android 8.1||Android 7.1|
|24.0MP front camera, 12 MP(f/1.8) + 20 MP(f/1.6) back cameras||16.0MP front camera, 20MP(f/1.7) + 16MP(f/1.7) back cameras|
|3400mAh, super charge||3300 mAh, dash charge|
While the specs are probably the best way to start, the devil, as always, is hiding in the details.

Huawei P20 vs. OnePlus 5T: design
The two phones are very similar in size: the Huawei P20 measures 149.1 x 70.8 x 7.65 mm while the OnePlus 5T is 156.1 x 75 x 7.3 mm. Then both phones come with large screens, the P20 definitely does better on the bezel-less look – that is, if you don't mind the iPhone X-like notch housing the front camera lens and speaker.
Then, there are the colors. While the P20 comes in a pretty wide range of color options among which you can find both the classic black and the funky rose gold, it's the phone's twilight color model that has earned the title of "one of the best phone colors in years". The gradient blues, purples and pinks definitely stand out in the sea of black and metallic finishes and give the Huawei P20 a strong edge when it comes to aesthetics.
Another feature of note on Huawei P20 is iPhone-esque. Gone is headphone jack and it's been replaced by, you've guessed it, a single USB-C audio port. The good part: you get USB-C headphones and a 3.5mm headphone jack adapter in the box.
Huawei P20 vs. OnePlus 5T: display
The display on the Huawei P20 is a 5.8 inch 2244x1080 18.7:9 LCD – the brighter and more expensive OLED display has been reserved for the P20 Pro.
The OnePlus 5T comes with a slightly bigger 6.1 inch full optic AMOLED screen with 2160 x 1080 pixels.
Both screens perform well with a variety of media: from watching high resolution videos to gameplay. The brightness level seems more than decent on both models as well and the only minor difference may be that the OnePlus 5T's AMOLED display will consume less power when displaying black images.
Huawei P20 vs. OnePlus 5T: cameras
Now to the cameras. As we've mentioned above, it's the Huawei P20 Pro that is basking in camera glory thanks to its triple Leica cameras. But don't underestimate the P20 — which comes with many of the same upgrades. There are 12MP and 20MP lenses (color and monochrome, f/1.8 and f/1.6 respectively) — but none of the lenses come with optical image stabilization, which is a bit of a disappointment.
With that, the images come out sharp and saturated and you have the same powerful night mode as on the Pro and 960fps slow motion video recording.
The selfie cam is an impressive 24MP - but you will need to keep an eye on the ever-present Beauty Mode that will make you look photoshopped to the moon and back.
The OnePlus 5T also features dual rear cameras: 16MP + 20MP with Sony sensors. Both cameras feature an aperture of f/1.7 for better low-light shots and 27.22mm focal length. There is no longer a telephoto lens on the phone, and, thus, no natural 2x zoom function. The 2x zoom is now handled digitally.
The camera performs quite well in low light - but does not win in comparison with the Google Pixel 2, Huawei P20 Pro and even Huawei P20. The front cam is 16MP and comes with a screen flash to help add light in darker conditions.
The camera app on the OnePlus 5T has a lot going for it - designed for efficient one-handed use, it features smooth and easy-to-use gesture controls.
Huawei P20 vs. OnePlus 5T: performance and battery
The Huawei P20 (just like the Huawei P20 Pro) runs on the Octa Core Kirin 970, which puts it one step ahead of OnePlus 5T's Octa Core Snapdragon 835. But then again, when you take all the benchmarks into consideration, both devices are pretty much neck in neck when it comes to speed and multitasking.
The Huawei P20 gets 128GB of expandable storage and 4GB of RAM (you get 6GB with the Pro version). The OnePlus 5T offers more RAM — 6GB or 8GB and also 64GB or 128GB internal storage.
The fact that Huawei has been able to stick a 3400mAh battery into a 7.65mm-thick phone is impressive on its own. Then, you have the company's high-tech charger that comes in the box and is capable of charging the phone from 0% to 60% in just 30 minutes.
But that's not news for the OnePlus 5T. Featuring just a slightly smaller battery — 3300mAh — the phone also comes with the famous Dash Charger capable of the same 0% to 60% performance.
Summing things up
The Huawei P20 is already available for sale in some countries at the rather steep $800 while the OnePlus 5T can be yours for $596.41. There is no doubt that with the Huawei P20 you are getting a generally more modern phone — from the bezel-less + notch design and interesting color combos to the powerful camera with great low light performance.
With that, the OnePlus 5T, though older, offers just about the same level of performance — and at a much more pocket-friendly price — but you won't get the fancy colors or the 24MP selfie shooter.
