Now, let’s see how this translates into the actual quality of your mobile photos.

Huawei P30 Pro camera review: details

Now, let’s go over each of the cameras on the Huawei P30 Pro.

The P30 Pro’s primary camera comes with the 1/1.7 inch sensor, which is the largest sensor to be featured on a smartphone camera to date — larger than the IMX586. The 40MP main camera is capable of producing quality photos, even in much less than perfect light conditions. In fact, the phone has been praised by a large number of users for being able to take good photos in low light even in normal mode.

The ultra-wide camera packs in 20 megapixels with a standard RGB sensor. The cam also sports an auto-focus feature — something that we are missing on the Samsung Galaxy S10+. This is a really important component to have onboard as it give you more variety when framing your shots. The lens will give your pictures more sharpness in the centre with slightly softer edges. Thus, make sure you center your photos properly for the maximum sharpness.

Huawei P30 Pro camera review: 5x optical zoom + 10x AI zoom + 50x digital zoom

The Huawei P30 Pro’s most impressive and talked about feature is its 5x optical zoom — which, up till recently, was the largest optical zoom featured on a smartphone camera.

P30 Pro’s 5x zoom

When shooting in good light, the camera’s ultra-wide lens is capable of producing very sharp, detailed photos. However, there is a notable decrease in the crispness of produced images in low light due to noise. This could be because of the camera’s 1/4 inch sensor and an f/3.4 aperture, which are not enough to support detail in low light.

Another thing the users have reported about the P30 Pro’s 5x zoom is that the more you zoom in into an object, the shakier the camera may get. This would be especially noticeable if you shoot at weird angles.

Then, you have the 10 AI (or hybrid) zoom, which collects information from several sensors and combines them into one image. Once again, in good light, this results in very sharp detailed photos — in fact, your photos might even look as if they’ve taken using an actual 10x optical zoom. However, low light conditions lead to inferior quality photos with a substantial loss of detail and quite bit of noise.

Thus, here’s where we stand. Having a smartphone camera capable of a 5x optical zoom and a 10x hybrid zoom enhancement is very impressive — and you will get truly quality results in good light conditions. The technology, however, is not yet there to translate the same quality into images shot in low light. It is, thus, suggested that, for the time being, you use the feature primarily in good light.

Huawei P30 Pro camera review: low light performance

While the camera’s zoom capabilities are very light-dependent, the Huawei P30 Pro is noted for its impressive low light performance of its 40MP primary sensor — and we are not talking about Night Mode. Even in standard mode, the phone’s camera has been praised for its low light performance — even when shooting scenery.

The best thing about the P30 Pro’s low light performance is the absence of noise and grain — which are the two main contributors to poor quality of images. Huawei have employed a very efficient noise reduction algorithm to tackle the issue and, as a result, you will get crisp images with natural colors and minimal blur.

As we’ve already mentioned above, low light performance on the ultra-wide lens leaves a lot to be desired and you will need to use Night mode to get decent image quality.

Huawei P30 Pro camera review: shooting modes

With the Huawei P30 Pro, you get to choose between several shooting modes: Macro mode for close-ups; Aperture mode enhances the aperture and is capable of capturing very good portraits (even though there is also the dedicated Portrait mode onboard); Pro mode that lets you choose between the three rear cameras, use manual settings and capture images raw.

Huawei P30 Pro camera review: selfie camera

Even though the P30 Pro is primarily noted for its rear cameras, it also packs in a decent selfie camera coming with 32 megapixels. In good light, the front camera produces impressive natural shots with a good color reproduction. However, there are again some issues when it comes to taking selfies in low light — you will get some noise and some blur and the colors will pale a bit as well.

Huawei P30 Pro camera review: the verdict

The Huawei P30 Pro offers the best mobile camera performance on the market — this is a fact.

The phone’s rear cameras are especially noted for being able to capture great detail and sharpness, one of the best low light performances on the primary sensor, impressive zoom options and very good video stabilization.

The thing that still needs a bit of work is low light performance on the phone’s other lenses as well as the selfie cam. But we are also being nitpicky — what Huawei have achieved with the P30 Pro cameras is a very powerful statement about how far mobile photography can go in the next few years.
