Huawei P30 pro vs mate 20 Pro: the match!

By  Linky Johnson 2019-04-16 505 0

Although the mate 20 Pro is already six months old, it is certainly not to forget and still appears in our list of the best devices on the market. On the other hand, the new P30 Pro offers an impressive photo experience ever seen on a Smartphone, allowing it to get incredible results in low light conditions. But other than that, what are the differences between the two? Which one should I buy?

When you want to buy the best photophone, it's easy to find several online tests that recommend buying a pixel 3 or pixel 3 XL, especially thanks to its well-optimized software that makes it possible to make a difference in the field. Let's not forget the new Galaxy S10, which offers far better results than previous generations in most situations.

However, this time we are going to talk about two Huawei smartphones with which the Chinese manufacturer is trying to literally rewrite how to take pictures with a Smartphone. We know that the three cameras of the mate 20 Pro allow anyone to get great photos in all kinds of light conditions, but the P30 Pro is no different. In fact, unlike the mate series, the P30 Pro features a new periscopic sensor with X5 optical zoom which, combined with the main sensor, promises to get a hybrid zoom with almost no loss of detail up to X10.

A design that is not entirely different

No, we do not mean that the two smartphones are the same. However, Huawei has decided to share some aspects of the mate 20 Pro also on the P series. After all, it's not something new in the Smartphone industry. Apple has been doing the same thing for years with its iPhone and Samsung is no different with its Galaxy S series. These devices are indeed easily identifiable at a distance of a few meters from anyone, an aspect that should not be underestimated from a brand positioning perspective.

As for the screen, both Huawei devices have rounded edges, but the main difference is that the OLED screen of the P30 Pro, although larger, has a lower definition (full HD +). On the other hand, the screen of the mate 20 Pro offers a definition QHD +, an aspect to consider despite the fact that it is very difficult to see the difference to the naked eye.

The mate 20 Pro also has a larger notch, but it's because it contains the hardware for 3D face unlocking, a feature that lacks on the P30 Pro. Moreover, the latter does not have a front speaker but uses the vibrations of the screen to reproduce the sound, but only during the calls. This function also does not act as a stereo sound when listening to music, which is another disadvantage compared to the mate 20 Pro.

From an aesthetic standpoint, both devices offer original colors, and both are IP68 certified against water and dust. So you will have no problem using these smartphones in unfavourable weather conditions.

Few changes even under the hood

From the point of view of specifications, the P30 Pro has 8gb of RAM compared to the 6 GB of the mate 20 Pro and you can also buy it with 256 GB and 512 GB of internal memory. Apart from that, the rest is quite similar, including the Kirin 980 SoC, the 4200mAh battery with fast charge SuperCharge 40W and 15W for Wireless charging, plus the ability to enjoy reverse Wireless charging.

Both use a fingerprint reader built into the optical screen, but we know that the P30 Pro has been updated to provide greater reliability and speed.

The real novelty is the Photo Department

We can spend hours looking for the differences between these two devices, but there is no need to bypass them. What distinguishes the mate 20 Pro from the P30 Pro is the photo part that has been updated in terms of hardware and software in the latter.

First, let's start with the fully redesigned 40 MP main sensor, which now uses a single pixel layout, i.e. RYYYB (red, yellow, yellow, blue), compared to the traditional RGB (red, green, blue). This is the only way to get better performance in low light conditions, as well as significant improvements in the computer processing of the P30 Pro, of course. Huawei then decided to keep the excellent ultra wide-angle 20 MP sensor, but this time, according to Huawei, it is able to take less distorted photos.

The zoom quality of the P30 Pro has been improved with the new periscopic lens, which uses a Prism to reflect light at an angle of 90 degrees. The result is a X5 optical zoom without loss of quality, which had never been possible on a Smartphone before.

This sensor, combined with the main sensor, allows to obtain a hybrid zoom X10 (up to x50 in digital). The mate 20 Pro can also combine the power of two sensors, but the P30 Pro has an extra report and everything works beautifully.

Finally, the P30 Pro is also enriched with a time of flight (ToF) camera, a sensor that is gradually appearing on other smartphones, such as the honor view 20, whose main advantage is to be able to capture more information about depth of field, useful for creating Bokeh effects in portrait mode, but also for better managing augmented reality.

P30 Pro or mate 20 Pro: which to buy?

As their names indicate, the mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro belong to different lines of the Chinese manufacturer and do not conceal some important differences. The mate 20 Pro has a better screen and provides greater security in terms of unlocking the face, while the P30 Pro has a better camera.

This last aspect really impressed us during our dedicated test and this is one of the advantages that lately makes the difference when buying a new smartphone. But the price is also a very important element in this case: the new P30 Pro is available at the starting price of 999.90 euros, while you can find the mate 20 Pro at a lower price, even less than 700 euros on different online sites. A price difference that seems to me at the moment unjustified and that makes me lean towards the mate 20 Pro?

It is now up to you to decide: which of the two do you prefer?
