Huawei P30 vs. Huawei P30 Pro vs. P30 Lite: Which is better?

With its 2019 smartphone models of the P series, Huawei does a lot right, especially design and photo functions are strong. But if you don't follow every smartphone innovation, you could put the Huawei P30 and P30 Pro in the same pot, as they have almost the same name. But the differences aren't just in the details, if you look at Huawei P30 and P30 Pro in comparison, the phones differ clearly from each other in some points, but in other areas they are simply the same. If money doesn't matter, the Huawei P30 Pro is certainly the better choice when comparing the features. Officially, the Pro starts from 999 Euro. You can buy the Huawei P30 for 250 Euro less. But do you really need all the features of the P30 Pro or can you get over the cutbacks on the P30? To help you find the right smartphone for your needs, here are the differences between the Huawei P30 Pro and P30 in comparison.
Huawei P30 Pro vs. P30: The biggest differences
The Huawei P-Series also has several models to offer in 2019: The upper class is the Huawei P30, the luxury model is the P30 Pro and the middle class is the Huawei P30 Lite. The biggest differences between the P30 Pro and P30 are in the following areas: Display, camera, battery and hardware details.
Display comparison of P30 and P30 Pro
Mobile phones have grown in size in recent years. But the usable display area has grown as a result. The Huawei P30 Pro and P30 also follow the trend, with the Pro offering a larger screen at 6.47 inches than the P30 at 6.1 inches. As a reminder, the predecessor model P20 Pro also has a screen of "only" 6.1 inches.
In the P30 Pro and P30, the display occupies almost the entire front, at the upper edge in the middle there is a small camera recess (notch) and the corners are rounded. Despite these similarities, a P30 Pro can be recognized immediately in comparison to the P30, as it offers chic, rounded edges on the right and left (Edge Display). But beware: What looks so cool isn't everyone's cup of tea, there are also users who swear by a flat display - i.e. with recognizable right and left edges. That's only possible with P30.
Both are OLED displays with identical resolution (2,340 x 1,920 pixels), practically stretched Full HD screens, also called Full HD+. The pixel density of the P30 is even higher, 422 pixels per inch (ppi) compared to the P30 Pro (399 ppi). But you can't really see it with the naked eye. The screen of the P30 Pro has a higher brightness and a more stable viewing angle. But only so that no misunderstandings arise: The display of the P30 is also great.
Even from behind you can easily distinguish a P30 Pro from a P30: The Pro model has four cameras, the P30 has "only" three. Both take strong pictures, as fans of the P series are used to. But the P30 Pro is the ultimate here, the P30 has to make some compromises in comparison, but overall the level is still high. The ultra-wide angle camera in the P30 only resolves with 16 instead of 20 megapixels, the zoom lens only achieves three times the magnification, while the Pro version offers five times the zoom. The fourth camera of the P30 Pro, the "Time of Flight" camera, is missing from the P30. At least Huawei also uses its new sensor for the smaller model, which provides better pictures in the dark. If you leave the Pro aside for a moment, the P30 can easily take on photography with the iPhone XS. If you will: The camera of the P30 deserves a "wow" - for the Pro there is a "double wow".
There are also a few differences in terms of performance, but there are also many similarities: Although the Kirin 980, Huaweis's top chipset, clocks in both devices, the main memory of the P30 Pro is slightly larger at eight gigabytes (GB). Because the P30 runs with two GB less, i.e. six GB RAM. Of course, more is always better, but in everyday life you will rarely notice the difference.
More painful is another memory topic: The P30 is only available with 128 GB memory. This can be too little for some users. The P30 Pro, on the other hand, is also available with 256 GB. The Pro version with 512 GB is currently not available from us. Neither the P30 Pro nor the P30 can be expanded with conventional microSD cards. If you need more memory, you have to use Huaweis' own memory cards. They are called "Nano Memory Card" (NM Card) and are a bit more expensive compared to Micro SD cards.
The last difference: The battery in the P30 with 3,650 mAh is somewhat smaller than that in the P30 Pro (4,200 mAh). It's not surprising that the smaller smartphone also gets the smaller battery - after all, the slightly lower performance doesn't need so much energy either. The decisive factor is how long the smartphones last: Benchmarks show that the two don't give much away here.
If you haven't decided yet whether you prefer a P30 Pro or a P30, you should consider a few differences in detail. The P30 Pro is more robust than the P30. The P30 meets the IP53 requirements and is therefore not completely dustproof and only partially waterproof. The P30 Pro, on the other hand, is IP68-certified and thus protected against water and dust. Although the back of the P30 is also made of glass, it does not support wireless charging. The P30 Pro also comes with a more powerful 40 watt fast charger.
But the P30 also has a few advantages compared to the Pro, so it has a jack connector, which is missing in the Pro model. If you want to listen to music with wired headphones, you have to use the adapter for the USB-C port. The telephony speaker has also been saved on the P30 Pro, instead Huawei relies on structure-borne sound transmission. The housing design of the Pro can also be ordered in red.
Huawei always offers a Lite model in the P-Series, currently the P30 Lite. In contrast to its sister models, the Huawei P30 Lite is in the mid-range, with a few smaller units at various points, such as the processor (Kirin 710) or RAM (only 4 GB RAM). But with a price of 369 Euros it is much cheaper. The P30 Lite is less "wow" and does without high-end technology, but the camera is good, after all it also has a triple camera. In addition, there is a nice large Full HD+ display with 6.1 inches.
A second alternative for all those who have P30 and P30 Pro in mind could be the predecessor models, i.e. P20 and P20 Pro. The current P series is a strong update, but the P20 and P20 Pro are still very good smartphones, which you can currently get at a reasonable price.
Huawei P30, P30 Pro or P30 Lite?
"Pro is always better" is not always true. Of course, the Huawei P30 Pro beats its sister model P30 in terms of feature count, but it also costs considerably more. The chic design and the best camera are only to be found in the Pro. But even with the normal P30 you get a camera that makes other smartphones look old. The flat display and the jack connection could be the deciding factors for the P30. But the P30 Pro is more robust. The Huawei P30 Lite plays a league lower down and still offers solid technology at a very good price. This could also be an argument for the predecessor models P20 or P20 Pro: Both are not yet old-fashioned. And if you're not yet happy with the Huaweis P-series, take a look at the other series: Mate, Y and P Smart.
