Huawei Watch GT vs. Huawei Watch 2: design

The Huawei Watch 2 goes for the action-oriented sporty look (which is quite different from the premium metal finish on the original Huawei Watch). The Watch 2 sports a chunky plastic body and a rather large bezel around its face.

Huawei Watch 2 design

The Huawei Watch 2 has a very defined health and fitness angle — and functionality triumphs over looks in this case. The watch is sturdy can survive the strains of even a tough workout, but there is nothing particularly eye-catching about its looks.

The 20mm silicone strap on the Watch 2 is sweat-proof and you can easily remove it and replace it with a new one: though, you will be limited to Huawei straps.

The watch measures 1.9 x 1.7 x 0.5 inches and looks quite bulky on the wrist. Despite the considerable size, the Huawei Watch 2 only weighs 57g. The watch gets a 1.2-inch 390 x 390 display.

Huawei Watch 2 size

The Huawei Watch GT looks quite similar to the Watch 2 — but it is slimmer at only 0.4 inches thick. The watch feels light on the wrist and comes with an improved full-color 1.39 inch display with 454 x 454 resolution.

Huawei Watch GT design

The GT’s body is made of a ceramic and metal combo and does sport a more premium look than the Watch 2 and you get more of a "traditional" watch feel.

The watch is available in two editions: Active (46mm case) and Elegant (42mm case).

Huawei Watch GT vs. Huawei Watch 2: insides and OS

The Huawei Watch 2 runs on the Snapdragon Wear 2100 chipset (designed specifically for wearables) and packs 768MB of RAM. Some users have reported that this may not be enough to fully support the watch’s functionality and, at times, it does get sluggish.

On the OS side, the watch uses Wear OS but it does have most of the Android Wear 2.0 features.

Android Wear 2.0 features

The Huawei GT uses the ARM Cortex-M4 processor. Unlike the Watch 2, the Huawei GT runs on something called LightOS software. Huawei’s decision to switch to its own software for this model may have some benefits — but most are counteracted by the software’s limitations. For instance, you won’t be able to download third party apps or use Google Pay — and there is no NFC onboard either. You do get lots of fitness features, customizable watch faces and notifications but that’s not really enough to compare with more comprehensive smartwatch operating systems.

Huawei Watch GT vs. Huawei Watch 2: features

As we’ve mentioned earlier, the Watch 2 markets itself primarily as a sports watch. Thus you get the full pack of sports tracking features onboard:

● Heart rate monitoring: which is essential for efficient workouts and keeping an eye on your body’s overall response to physical activity.

● Live GPS mapping: which will be especially useful for joggers, cyclers, hikers, etc.

● Real-time guidance: you will be motivated by timely updates of your performance

● Workout data report: helpful in analysing your training sessions and measuring progress

● Offline music: you will be able to download music tracks right on the device so that you will have something to listen to even when not connected to Wi-Fi or using mobile data.

Speaking of connectivity, the Huawei Watch 2 comes in two versions: there are 4G and non 4G editions of the watch. You can use an actual SIM card or an eSIM and there is an integrated GPS antenna onboard.

 SIM card version

With 4GB of memory , you can download a variety of applications on the Watch 2 — which is a great option to have at your disposal.

Long battery life is another of the model’s highlights. Without a SIM card, the Watch 2 can last for an impressive two days on a single charge. With the SIM card in, however, this will be cut down in half. There is also an option to use the Watch 2 in "watch mode", which will give you 18 hours of battery life on a single charge — but with very limited functionality.

The Huawei GT also supports a full range of sports functions. Some of the watch’s highlights include:

● HUAWEI TruSeen™ 3.0 heart rate monitoring offering accurate real-time monitoring using a self-learning algorithm and innovative sensors.

● Precise GPS positioning (via 3 satellites): the watch uses GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO for more accurate mapping.

● Real-time workout coach: just like with the Watch 2, you will be able to receive guidance training and workout feedback.

● Multiple sports modes: as the GT is equipped with a variety of sensors, it can provide efficient tracking for different workouts including (but not limited to) jogging, cycling, swimming, hiking, etc.

● HUAWEI TruSleep™ 2.0 is another feature that the company takes great pride in design in collaboration with Harvard Medical School CDB Centre. With it, you will get a detailed analysis of your sleep patterns as well as suggestions for improving the quality of your night-time rest.

Unlike with the Watch 2, there are no 4G options with the Huawei GT, so you won’t be able to use it as a standalone device with a SIM card.

However, the GT makes up for a lot of its shortcomings in battery life. In fact, better battery life could well be one of the reasons behind the company’s decision to drop Wear OS.

According to Huawei, with the GT, you will be able to get a whole month of battery life on a single charge. Taking into account that the Huawei Watch 2 requires recharging every day or once every two days (without a SIM card), GT’s offer sounds really impressive.

Huawei Watch GT vs. Huawei Watch 2: price and verdict

Prices for the Huawei Watch 2 at launch stood at $299 for the non-4G edition and about $400 for the 4G edition. However, they have since dropped internationally and you may be able to find the Huawei Watch 2 4G edition for as low as under $300.

The Huawei Watch GT’s starting prices were $199.99 for the Active edition and $229.99 for the Elegant edition.

So which watch should you choose?

In this case, we are looking at two devices that are quite different. If you are looking for a classically stylish piece of wristwear with sports functionality and a really long battery life — the Huawei Watch  GT would be the perfect match.

If you want more features on your smartwatch (like 4G support) and don’t mind the extra bulk, the Huawei Watch 2 might make you very happy.
