iOS 13 & Co.: Apple cut off support for older devices

By  Adeline Belluz 2019-06-04 1850 0

In the future, the current mobile operating system will no longer run on the iPhone 6. Other devices will also become old iron with the new iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Apple has now announced what hardware requirements its next mobile operating system will have. iOS 13 will therefore no longer run on all devices that have supported iOS 12. The iPhone must be at least an iPhone 6s, 6 and 6 Plus are no longer supported.

The iPhone 5s is also not compatible with iOS 13 - but despite rumours to the contrary, the iPhone SE can still be upgraded to the latest operating system version. The other iOS-13 iPhones are 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus, 8, 8 Plus, X, XR, XS and XS Max

With the iPod touch it was the highest railroad

With the iPod touch, Apple is cancelling support for all older models. Only the just released iPod touch of the seventh generation gets along with iOS 13. The iOS 13 version for the iPad, now trading under the name iPadOS 13, requires at least an iPad Air 2, an iPad mini 4, a fifth generation iPad or an iPad Pro with 9.7, 10.5, 11 or 12.9 inches.

Apple has also provided information on device support for watchOS 6. This covers all models of the Apple Watch computer watch that are not the original model - i.e. Series 1, 2, 3 and 4. This is commendable, but it must be shown how high-performance the system will be on older devices.

What about macOS Catalina

macOS 10.15 alias Catalina seems, at least at first glance, to be the same as macOS 10.14 alias Mojave in terms of device support. The MacBook has to be at least a 2015 model, the iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini will not be under 2012. All iMac Pros will be able to use Catalina, as well as all Mac Pros since 2013 (ergo: the "Trashcan" devices).

All new Apple operating systems are expected in autumn - probably in September and October, as Apple often publishes iOS before macOS.
