This year (2019) three famous manufacturer from Huawei, Apple and Qualcomm released their latest processor - Kirin 990, Apple A13 Bionic and Snapdragon 855 Plus. However, which processor is the most powerful? Let’s find out.

Kirin 990 5G - excellent AI and 5G performance

The Kirin 990 5G is the smallest 5G mobile phone chip in the industry, using the most advanced TSMC 7nm + EUV process. At the same time, 5G Modem is integrated into the SoC chip for the first time. Kirin 990 5G supports NSA and SA dual networking 5G mode. Based on the built-in Baron 5000 baseband, Kirin 5000 can achieve 2.3Gbps peak download rate, uplink peak rate of 1.25Gbpsand support dual card dual 5G standby, which is an absolute industry leader. The peak uplink rate of 5G reached 1.25Gbps.

Huawei Kirin 990 5G chip won a total of six world first: the industry's first commercial 7nm+EUV 5G SOC, the industry's first 5G NSA&SA dual network 5G chip, the industry's first 16-core mail-G76 GPU and other graphics theoretical performance improved by 6%. But energy efficiency was 20 per cent higher, with ISPs upgrading to Kirin ISP 5.0 to support LPDDR4X memory and UFS 2.1 flash memory.

The built-in AI performance supports more than 300 operators and 90% of visual computational neural networks. Apple A13 Bionic - outstanding performance and high efficiency but not support 5G network

In terms of computing performance, the A13 CPU has two high-performance cores, 20% faster and 30% less power consumption; with four performance cores, the speed is also increased by 20%, and the power consumption is reduced by 40%. Apple says the A13 CPU can perform 1 trillion operations per second. At the same time, Apple's A13 processor uses 7nm technology, tailored for high performance and low power consumption, with 8.5 billion transistors.

On the GPU side, the A13 GPU is a quad-core design that increases speed by 20% and reduces power consumption by 40%. At the same time, the A13 also has an 8-core neural computing engine that improves performance by 20% and reduces power consumption by 15%.


However, the Apple A13 Bionic chip also has shortcomings, the biggest disadvantage is that it does not support 5G network, from the current form, the chip corresponding to the iPhone 11 model life cycle is only about a year. Of course, if you're not interested in 4G only and 5G, this chip won't be a problem for another three to five years.

Snapdragon 855 Plus - slightly upgraded version of Snapdragon 855

Qualcomm 855plus uses 1 / 3 / 4 core equipment, which is different from the previous 4 + 4 type. Qualcomm Apple A12 is specially optimized for single thread and catches up with Qualcomm A12 in some aspects.

Snapdragon 855 Plus​ 

In terms of frequency, compared with 855, 855 Plus should be able to achieve 4.2% in terms of single thread, and the improvement in the graphics part is relatively large, with a range of 15%. The addition of Snapdragon Elite Gaming, is designed to provide users with a competitive advantage in games, such as support for Vulkan1.1 graphics drivers, which is 20% more energy efficient than open GL ES, and Snapdragon Elite Gaming also supports system-level Catton optimization. Game fast loading optimization and so on.


Snapdragon 855 Plus is indeed a toothpaste extrusion product, not only the process has not changed, the main core is the difference in frequency, originally for Qualcomm. The increase in calorific value and power consumption caused by the increase in frequency has also been offset by the mature process of TSMC 7nm. Snapdragon 855 Plus has hardly increased the cost for Qualcomm.

According to the Geekbench score above, we can see that the Apple A13 Bionic scores the highest points, and it is followed by Kirin 990 5G. And the Snapdragon 855 Plus gets the lowest points. However, the benchmark test cannot completely represent the phone’s performance. Especially when the 5G era is around the corner, the leading complete 5G network solution makes the Kirin 990 more competitive than another two processors.
