Kirin 990 would be the first SoC produced using the EUV technique

It had been heard before from some sources that the successor of the Kirin 980 would be a so-called Kirin 985, which would mean a small improvement on a large basis, so it will have to be seen if Huawei first launches this mentioned version as an intermediate leap before launching the Kirin 990 to the market during the last quarter of next year 2019.
According to the most recent reports, Huawei has become the second largest customer of TSMC, the manufacturer of processors, with whom they have maintained a close commercial relationship recently, and this would allow them to be the first to access the new manufacturing process of "extreme ultraviolet" nodes. (EUV), the future Kirin 990 being the first major beneficiary of this.
The close relationship between both companies (Huawei and TSMC) during the last years can be seen in the most recent milestones they have achieved together, remembering that the first processors with manufacture in 16nm, 10nm and 7nm were launched to the market under the seal Kirin de los SoCs de Huawei with the Kirin 960, Kirin 970 and Kirin 980 respectively.
According to Huawei, the development of the Kirin 980 has cost 300 million dollars, a process that began in 2015, during the first moments of their alliance with TSMC, with whom they studied the specifications and requirements of the manufacture of SoCs to a process of 7nm. The entire research and development process has taken 36 months.
The EUV manufacturing process will be introduced by TSMC in the second generation of processors with 7nm lithography (N7 Plus), a process with which they will continue for the manufacture of 5nm processors preparing a massive distribution during the year 2020 and it would not be rare that it would be the same Huawei who premiered it in the consumer market with the processor they are developing for their high ranges at that time.
