MacBook Pro 2019 will equipped with Intel Core i9

By  Adeline Kuang 2019-05-16 198 0

Last year, MacBook Pro 2018 was renewed in the summer, just after WWDC. Will Apple do it again this year? At least Intel is ready and has introduced new Coffee Lake Refresh chips to the market. The MacBook Pro may have 8 cores at its disposal.

The trend that was started in 2018 will continue this year. Of course, we are talking about more cores. The 13-inch MacBook Pro went from two to four cores in 2018 and the 15-inch model went from four to six cores. This year only the 15-inch model seems to get a possible core-grade.

15-inch MacBook Pro 2019 with Intel i9?

The Coffee Lake Refresh product line comes somewhat as a surprise. Intel hasn't been able to reduce its production process for some time now to create chips with more transistors that generate less heat. Coffee Lake Refresh is also produced at 14 nanometers, just like the last three generations of Intel chips. Intel Ice Lake, which finally makes the step to 10 nanometers, is not expected before the end of 2019.

The fact that it is an intermediate step does not mean that it is not a good step. Intel now also offers 8-core chips suitable for the 15-inch MacBook Pro. These include the Intel Core i9-9980H. Despite its 8 cores and maximum speed of 4.8GHz, it still meets the thermal requirements (45 watts) for the largest MacBook Pro.

Also the chips with 6 cores get a nice upgrade, namely more cache memory. Currently, the i7 chips still use 9MB of cache, but this year it will be 12MB.

Waiting for chips for 13-inch variant

Now we are waiting for chips for the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Apple uses the Intel U-series of 28 watts. This series has not yet been unveiled by Intel and Apple will probably wait a while before renewing the MacBook Pro until new Coffee Lake Refresh chips for the 13-inch version are also available. We are therefore counting on a launch between July and September.
