macOS 10.15 Catalina: all the new features of Apple's operating system

What operating system to run the new Mac Pro? Apple did not wait to provide the answer to this question. As soon as its new Mac Pro was unveiled at WWDC, Cupertino switched to MacOS Catalina, the new version of its in-house operating system that will equip its racehorse, but also MacBook, iMac and other Mac mini.
Catalina first attacks iTunes. As a reminder, iTunes is a central application for Mac users. She has followed all versions of macOS since 2001, and survived. But as more and more features are added, iTunes has become more and more confusing to use.
Goodbye iTunes, hello Music, Podcast and TV
It is now time for Apple's media library to say goodbye. Indeed, iTunes will be split into three distinct applications: Music, Podcast and TV. The three new entities take up a design that strongly recalls their ancestor but gains in readability.
The well named Music will take over the musical part of the library. You can store your favorite albums and songs there. Not surprisingly, Podcast brings together the podcasts of each user in a dedicated application that already exists on iOS and that is struggling to prove itself. Finally, the TV application will be limited to the video part, whether it is films, TV series or clips. But the biggest innovation related to the disappearance of iTunes is to be found on the synchronization side. Previously, every iPhone owner had to launch the famous software to backup or synchronize their smartphone. In Catalina, this part will be managed natively, directly in the Finder.
An iPad as a second screen? Thank you Sidecar
Among the other features launched on Catalina, two of them stand out: Sidecar and Find My. The first one is for iPad owners. With it, they will be able to use their tablet as a second screen or as a graphic palette.
Find My, on the other hand, uses one of the features already available on iOS, the one that allows you to recover your lost or stolen device. Unlike the mobile version, Find My can be used even when the Mac is offline. How? How? Apple has given some snippets of explanation that will need to be explored further. Indeed, each Mac, even if it is not connected to the network, will transmit a signal, relayed by other surrounding devices, allowing its owner (and the police) to locate it. Security seems to be one of Catalina's major concerns since, in addition to Find My, the new version of macOS introduces Activation Lock, an application that allows her computer to be locked more securely. It will be impossible for a thief to reset it and resell it without your iCloud account.
Catalina also introduces a new design for applications such as Photos, Notes and Reminders that do not undergo any major modifications but include some new features, such as a new Photo navigation system that highlights the most successful photos. Finally, native applications welcome a new feature: Screentime, (translate, screen time) also from iOS and which gives you a precise idea of the time spent in front of your screen.
A macOS under the sign of accessibility
The new version of macOS makes it a point of honour to be more accessible. As a result, Catalina fully integrates voice control to allow as many people as possible to use the operating system. In this respect, Apple's demo was impressive. In short, it is possible to control each action of the OS by voice at a level of detail rarely achieved.
Finally, the presentation of macOS Catalina ended with a reminder of Project Catalyst (known as Marzipan), an Arlesian at Apple that is taking shape for good. In concrete terms, this means allowing developers to create macOS applications based on iPad or iPhone applications. Thus, it will soon be possible to create the same application that can be shared on all three platforms: iOS, iPadOS and macOS. In other words, on his iPhone, his tablet and his MacBook for example.
Already available as beta developers, mac10.15 Catalina will be available in public beta version from July and in the fall as a final version for the general public. As usual, the update will be free of charge.
