Mate X: Google participated in the development of Huawei's folding smartphone

While Samsung boasted last November of working closely with Google on its folding smartphone, the Korean manufacturer is not the only one to have benefited from the Android developer's software support. This is also the case for Huawei's Mate X, as we learned this week at MWC 2019.

Last November, during the Samsung Developer Conference, Samsung and Google announced that they had collaborated to develop the interface for the manufacturer's future folding screen smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Samsung had made it a real communication argument during its conference, while Google announced that it was "working closely with Samsung on a device they plan to launch early next year". This does not mean, however, that this is not the case for other manufacturers as Google told us during MWC 2019.

During an exchange with several Google executives, including Hiroshi Lockheimer, we learned that Google had also worked with Huawei on the Mate X software interface. When Google announced support for folding screens on Android last November, it explained how to work on different types of folding. "We are working closely with our partners to ensure that we have an API that is common to all developers," said Sagar Kamdar, product manager at Google.

For the Android developer, natively offering a foldable interface for manufacturers helps to ensure that everyone doesn't do things in their own corner. A good way to avoid device fragmentation, but also better support for applications offered on your operating system.
