At the recent Taipei Computer Show, MediaTek announced the launch of a new 5G chip with a built-in 5G baseband or Helio M70. In fact, the M70 was released at the end of last year, and now its further parameters have been announced.
According to official information, the theoretical download speed of the M70 is 4.7 Gbps and the upload speed is 2.5 Gbps. In addition to the 5G network, it is also compatible with 2, 3, 4G networks.
The new 5G SoC of MediaTek, in addition to the integrated M70 baseband, uses the latest A77 core from ARM, and the GPU part comes from ARM's latest Mali-G77. The chip's process is also TSMC's latest 7nm process.
MediaTek said that the new processor will send samples to customers in the third quarter of this year, and terminals will be available in the first quarter of next year. In other words, we can experience the mobile phone using MediaTek 5G chip as soon as next year.
From the current progress, this year, 5G mobile phones will be sold in China. However, the baseband estimates they use are mostly Qualcomm's Opteron X50. Qualcomm's 5G baseband is still immature in terms of process and compatibility.
In general, in 2019, 5G technology is still not mature. For ordinary consumers, 5G terminals are more early adopters. Some mobile phone manufacturers, including Apple, have given up the launch of 5G mobile phones this year. In 2020, with the maturity of 5G baseband technology and the initial coverage of operators' 5G networks, it will be more meaningful to ordinary consumers.
The newly launched SoC of MediaTek is obviously built for 5G mobile phones. In terms of various key parameters, it has basically come up with its own housekeeping skills. If the actual performance of this product can really be as good as the official promotion, then MediaTek may actually be able to turn over in the flagship market. Let us look forward to it together.
