Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X, choose which one?

By  Adan Flannigan 2019-10-10 1996 0

October 2, 2019. Microsoft has introduced for Surface Pox X, Surface Duo and Surface Neo, and a new Surface Pro 7 on the Microsoft activities. While the two Microsoft tablets, Surface Pro 7 and Pro X, which one is better? Which one should I buy? Here to help make sure you pick the right device we’ve broken down how the new Surface Pro 7 and Surface X compare, revealing each device’s specific strengths and weakness.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X: Display and ink

Compared to the Surface Pro 6, the display portion of the Pro 7 has not changed. It is also the square 3:2 screen with the best ratio of 12.3 inches 2736x1824 resolution 267PPI for the tablet. Support for Surface Pen to write high quality ink with 4096 pressure, and also support tilt to change color. When the pen is close, it can be magnetically attracted to the side of the plate.

Pro X's touch screen is different, the size of the body is about the same as the Pro7, but the narrower screen frame increases the screen ratio. So the 13-inch screen is 2880x1920 resolution and 267PPI. The ratio is 3:2, so it is almost the same as the experience on Pro 7.

The detachable keyboard has a storage compartment with a Surface Slim Pen that can be recharged when not in use. If you're tired of pens that have been dropped from Pro in your bag, this change will be very popular. By the way, Slim Pen can also be used on other Surface devices.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X: performance

Surface Pro X is the first Pro product on the market to use ARM. Built in a custom 7nm Microsoft SQ1 7-watt CPU, the energy consumption per wattage is three times that of the Surface Pro 6. This CPU is basically a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx with eight cores, 3GHz clock frequency and custom Adreno 685 graphics card (GPU) products, not to mention support for dual 4K displays.

The GPU's power is up to two T floating point performance - the original Xbox One has only 1.3T floating point - not just for gaming. OpenGL games can't run on ARM, and the more suitable runtime is network and scripting applications. However, UNITY and Unreal engines provide support for ARM, so you can see more premium mobile games on Pro X in the future. If you have good performance on paper, you have to actually test it to know, but if you plan to buy it as a game console, then don't buy Pro X.

The Intel Iris Plus graphics card in the Core i5 and i7 in Surface Pro 7 can run lightweight games, don't expect to play more. If you have Project xCloud, Microsoft's streaming game service is another matter. With a fast and stable network connection, both Pro 7 and Pro X enjoy a high quality gaming experience.

As far as the CPU is concerned, it is compared with the Snapdragon 8cx and the Intel Core i5-8250U. ARM has been smashed a few streets. Battery life is still acceptable, image performance is also very impressive, productivity app processing performance and i5 match. Of course, Intel is now entering the 10th generation "Ice Lake" chip to advance its performance battery life at its own pace. We are still waiting to test two devices, but the ARM chip needs a virtual X86 app, so Intel's performance will lead.

The memory of both devices can be up to 16GB LPDDR4X. If you want to save money, Pro 7 can be as small as 4GB, while Pro X can be as small as 8GB. For storage, the Pro7 is available with a maximum of 1TB of SSD, while the Pro X is 512GB. The difference is that the hard drive on the Pro X can be replaced without disassembling the entire body, but not on the Pro 7.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X: Price

The Pro 7 starts at $749, which includes the Intel Core i3-1005G1 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD, excluding Type Cover and Surface Pen. The top model is $2,299, including the Core i7-065G7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB of solid state drive. Even more expensive than Pro X.

Surface Pro X is also available in several configurations, including $999 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of SSD. Adding to a 256GB SSD will cost $1,299. If you add 16GB and 256GB, you need $1,499. The highest 16GB plus 512GB SSD will cost $1,799.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X:choose which one?

● Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is better than performance

The 10th generation Intel Core Lake CPU in Pro 7 is hard to beat in performance, and Iris Plus is not a joke. The maximum 1TB storage space can also enjoy the wireless speed of Wi-Fi6. Although there is no LTE and that long battery life, the Pro7 is more expensive than traditional equipment.

● Microsoft Surface Pro X is more portable

The ARM-powered Surface Pro X is not as good as the high-end Pro 7, but with LTE support, longer battery life, and a thinner body for easy carrying. The new flat-panel is more portable, and the two USB-C connectors provide enough scalability.
