MIUI 11: dark mode, new UI elements.... the new features of the Xiaomi MIUI 11

In a question and answer session, Xiaomi officials announced some of the new features of MIUI 11. It seems that the Chinese giant is set to bring features such as a system-wide Dark mode, enhanced Dolby effects, ability to lock an app using face or fingerprint locking system, and the option to adjust the font and display sizes separately.

MIUI 11 - Features

Xiaomi's MIUI interface is certainly one of the most striking because it profoundly changes the appearance of Android. Of course, it divides a lot and there are as many fans as there are critics. No one can deny, however, that it incorporates a very large number of features, some of which are new, and each major update - or almost - generally brings significant new features.

For MIUI 11, the next release, Xiaomi seems to want to bring a little more flexibility to its interface to make it "a new and unique OS". At least that's what Liu Ming and Ge Rui, directors in charge of products and design for the Chinese firm, respectively, suggested.

MIUI is a visually aging interface. A number of its visual elements have not or only slightly evolved since several versions already, starting with its icons. With MIUI 11, Xiaomi intends to rework this with flatter and more minimalist logos. Users will also be able to choose the shape of the icons according to their preferences (square, round, squirrel, etc.).

Moreover, Xiaomi wants to give a better coherence to the general design of the system and more fluid animations. A dark "system" theme is also being developed, and could extend not only to the interface, but also to the browser and third-party applications.

Other optimizations should also be in the spotlight, particularly with regard to the status bar. The clock could be positioned on the right, as is the case on most Android smartphones, while the spacing of the icons and their number should be better adapted to the possible notch of the phone. It should also be noted that Xiaomi could add a feature to hide the notch precisely by overloading the notification bar.

An intensive energy saving mode should also be added. This "ultra power saving mode" should pass the phone screen in black and white and only give access to calls and SMS to drastically reduce the smartphone's energy consumption.

Of course, these are not the only new features of this update of Xiaomi smartphones. Notifications should be better grouped together, an option should be provided to automatically delete screenshots once they are shared and more.

This firmware is still under development and significant changes can still be made to all these features. At this time, no date has been advanced for this update, but MIUI 10 was announced on June 1, 2018, which provides a window for the announcement of MIUI 11.

Remember that MIUI versions are not automatically indexed to Android updates. Also, MIUI 11 should be based on Android 9 Pie initially before moving on to Android 10 Q.
