Mobvoi Ticwatch E2 review: less is more

By  Jordan Hobbs 2019-05-22 1318 0

The new Ticwatch E2 poses a recurring question: better bird in hand than a hundred flying? There are very good watches on the market, some with more functions, and even more modern technology, but the Ticwatch E2 is cheap, functional and, the little it does, it does very well.

The good

The bad

Good autonomy

Low price

No automatic brightness

Solid housing

Apparent and inelegant

Good screen

A really cheap smartwatch

Is the smartwatch a luxury? It doesn't have to be, at least with Mobvoi and the Ticwatch E2. It only costs 159.99 euros, a bargain, if you compare it with the LG Watch W7, which costs nothing less than 449 euros. In terms of design, there is no choice: the Ticwatch E2 is only available in black.

Not very pretty, but sturdy

As we already know, design is a matter of taste. But, personally, I've shown Ticwatch E2 to a lot of people and nobody thought it was a beauty. The casing is made of a somewhat coarse plastic, and it's quite thick. The silicone bracelet is soft and pleasant to the touch, but does not make a lasting impression. But the good thing is that the frame is standard, and therefore the Ticwatch E2 can be used with countless straps. There's a button to the right, that's all. It's actually a shame, because in smartwatches with Wear OS, the additional buttons can be assigned freely. You can't do it here.

The sister model of the E2 is the Ticwatch S2, which looks similar, but justifies its 20 euro surcharge with a military certification for a specially protected casing. The E2 lacks such certification, but the watch remains water resistant at 5 ATM and allows diving to 50 meters deep, not bad for this price category.

Good display without automatic

The savings that Mobvoi has made in design and material is compensated by the screen of the Ticwatch E2. The 1.39-inch round AMOLED panel offers better resolution than the first generation and now displays 400 x 400 pixels. The screen is sharp and has a high contrast, everything is easy to read even in sunlight, as long as the correct brightness has been set. Lacking an automatic system for this, the user has to set one of the five levels by itself, which is annoying from time to time, as is the fact that the lower level is too bright when you are in dark rooms, such as a bedroom or a cinema. With the automatic background brightness and low, the screen would be almost perfect.

Wear OS with an extra portion of sport

Wear OS does not give manufacturers too much leeway to adapt the system, the Ticwatch E2 is no exception to the rule. The funds that the manufacturer has created for the device fit well into the sporty approach, with a modern and tidy look. If you don't like them, you'll find many more alternatives to try in the Play Store. For the fitness screen to the right of the home page, users can choose between Google Fit or the equivalent of Mobvoi.

In addition, there are a number of Mobvoi fitness applications designed to encourage the user to play sports. The Ticwatch E2 is waterproof, so it has its own swimming function. Very useful, and even if the sports functions do not contain enough detailed information for professionals, they are a good addition.

Solid performance

Underneath the casing, the Ticwatch E2 carries a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 chip, which is no longer as cool, but guarantees solid performance. And that's exactly how the Ticwatch E2 behaved during our analysis. It's not that Mobvoi's smartwatch runs like a formula one, but it reacts very fast and its overall performance is good. I doubt the Snapdragon Wear 3100 would have worked better, because there have already been analyses during which it did not perform well. However, gesture navigation on the touch screen doesn't always work on the first try, especially with cold or wet fingers.

It is a pity that Mobvoi did not give the Ticwatch E2 an NFC chip, because it is giving up making payments with the Smartwatch through Google Pay or similar services. It is not yet possible to conclusively evaluate the heart rate monitor, as the manufacturer has promised to update it soon to improve both the speed and accuracy of measurements.

A good battery

The Ticwatch E2 is charged with its own charging base, to which the watch is magnetically attached. Annoying detail: the USB cable and the charger are inseparable. In case of a broken cable or a defective USB plug, a completely new charger is needed, the cable cannot be replaced individually.

On the other hand, the Ticwatch E2 battery can only speak for itself. The capacity is 415 mAh. The device usually lasts two days, which is more than most Wear-OS smartwatches can achieve. If you use GPS tracking for a long time and frequently, you don't have to give up a good battery life. A really good performance, which many more expensive watches cannot achieve.

Very good price

For almost 160 euros, you can't do anything wrong with Ticwatch E2. The watch is not the prettiest, but it is useful and has good functions. The battery is powerful enough for an Android smartwatch with Wear operating system, display and performance tuning. I find it a bit annoying that it doesn't have NFC, and I'm also quite used to the two additional buttons on my other device. But the end result is the Mobvoi Ticwatch E2 is more than decent.
