Moto Z2 Play preview: Lenovo modular phone is ready

By  GB Blog Official 2017-07-27 3661 24

In this Moto Z2 Play preview, we tell it all about the phone's specs, performance, look and the overall feel.

Moto Z2 Play

Released merely a few days ago, Moto Z2 Play is already making waves in the smartphone world. In this post, we take a detailed look at what the hype is about, go over the phone's specs and, of course, leave the final decision up to you: to buy or not to buy.

The Design

As it often is, looks are what draws your attention first. And in case of the Moto Z2 Play, you will want to allow your eyes to linger and explore every detail. The phone comes in a thin frame, much thinner, actually, than the model's predecessor - Moto Z Play, measuring merely 5.9mm in thickness.

Other design improvements include rounder edges, which give the phone a classier feel. The back panel houses a rear camera and a golden contact patch at the bottom. The front panel is glass with all the standard trimmings: front cam, LED indicators and several sensors. Below the display is a larger fingerprint scanner making unlocking the phone even more convenient. There is nothing of note in the left side, but the right one houses three buttons: volume +, volume – and the power button. A great addition here is the added texture to the power button, which makes it easy to distinguish it from the volume controls. The overall feeling is that the phone has definitely received an upgrade in design and feels sleek and suave.

Display & Cameras

Moto Z2 Play has a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display topped off with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection. The display is clear and bright (you can adjust the brightness and color saturation to your liking). You will find two new display-related functions: "Night Display" and "Moto Display". The first one is a blue light filter activated at the times you set and the second one makes the notifications fade in and out on the turned off screen — so you won't have to wake your phone to see what's up.

The rear camera is a 12MP with the aperture of f/1.7 and a new laser focusing system designed for a better low light performance. The camera's auto-focus is really quick, the colors are good and there is little noise even in a dark environment. The front camera comes with 5MP, the aperture of f/2.2 and is equipped with a dual LED flash — a great setup for all the selfie-lovers.

Hardware & Software

The Moto Z2 is running on the octa core Snapdragon 626 CPU with the speed of 2.2GHz. You get 4GB of RAM and a 64GB internal storage (expandable for up to 2TB with a micro SD card). Your gaming is powered by the Adreno 506 GPU. The phone is well-designed for multi-tasking and it's highly unlikely to experience any lagging unless you really "push" the device. The best thing is that the smartphone runs on the stock version of Android 7.1.1 Nougat with almost zero bloatware and no frills to slow you down.

Battery Life

Definitely one of the Moto Z2's strong points. It does come as a bit of a surprise, since this model has a slightly smaller battery than its predecessor (3,000mAh compared to 3,510mAh for Moto Z Play). However, the battery performs very well with up to 7 hours of screen on time taking only half of the battery life. The phone is promised to last for up to 19 hours of use.

Moto Mods

One of the main points of interest for Moto Z Play, Moto Z Force and now Moto Z2 Play is, of course the ability to add on Moto Mods — modular add-ons that snap on niftily onto the phone's back bringing extra functionality.

Moto TurboPower Pack, for instance, is one of the most popular add-ons letting you snap on a slim external battery with 3,490mAh on top of the original 3,000mAh coming inside the phone, more than doubling Moto Z2 Play's usage time. Another charging upgrade comes with the Moto Style Shell with Wireless Charging — just as the name implies, the shell lets you juice up your Moto Z2 Play without a cable. A must have for mobile gamers is the Moto GamePad mod, a gaming controller that attaches to the back of your Z2 Play adding dual control sticks, a D-pad, four tactile buttons and a 1,035mAh battery for your gaming pleasure.

Moto Mods

Other popular mods include Incipio Vehicle Dock, Moto Insta-Share Projector, JBL SoundBoost 2 and others.

Wrap Up

The Moto Z2 Play is a solid statement by Motorola. With a good battery life, a nice large screen and a more than adequate multitasking performance the phone has everything required of a flagship device and may just come out a winner as one of Motorola's finest.
