New iPhone 2019: iPhone XI or iPhone 11?

By  Adeline Belluz 2019-06-04 3325 0

iPhone 2019 is the generic name under which we currently refer to the iPhones that will be launched this year. Obviously the final name will not be this, but the nomenclature is still uncertain: they could be called iPhone XI, continuing with the Roman numerals of iPhone X, but considering that this name was chosen to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the brand, it is not to be excluded that the company of Cupertino returns to Arabic numbers, with the name iPhone 11.

Rumors

Everything we know so far, starting with the name, is to be considered a noise, also because there are still a few months before the presentation. However, there are two pieces of information on which several authoritative sources are beginning to agree, including the Wall Street Journal. The first is that also this year Apple will present three iPhone models (taking up the triptych proposed with iPhone XS, XS Max and XR), while the second is that at least one of the new iPhone will have three cameras.

Design: how will it look

It seems practically already confirmed that at least one model of the new iPhone will have three cameras, which will probably be placed in a bump camera on the left. To be precise, over the course of the months, two series of renderings were circulating, based on as many prototypes, which led us to two possible options:

Cameras on the left, positioned in a square projection that also houses LED flash and microphone, as seen in the image above. This first leak was published by Digit India in collaboration with the famous leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer: in this first version, the cameras were positioned asymmetrically, but a subsequent leak from Macotakara suggests a more orderly arrangement.

Cameras in the center, with LED flash surrounding the central camera and microphone below, as seen from the picture below. This second leak was published a week after the first one by CompareRaja, again in collaboration with OnLeaks.

Both renderings are based on real existing prototypes which, according to reports, have been in the EVT (Engineering Validation Test) phase. However, despite some conflicting information, it seems practically confirmed that the first design, the one with the protrusion on the left, will be the final design of iPhone 11. This is confirmed by several reasons, including the famous Japanese Portal Macotakara: at this point, considering the different sources that support this news, we consider it very likely that the new iPhone will have just this aspect (with good peace for any symmetry).

Camera

To talk about cameras, first let's make it clear: which model will have three cameras and which will not?

The Wall Street Journal had talked about the three sensors as an exclusive for the high-end model (top of the range), which had made us think that this would be an exclusive of the Max version. On the other hand, in recent weeks more and more sources have argued that the triple lens will not be exclusive to a single model, but will be present on at least two versions, iPhone XI and iPhone XI Max. This has been confirmed by bot OnLeaks and Macotakara, although with slightly conflicting information.

It seems now established, therefore, that iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will have three cameras, while iPhone 11 R will have two.

New iPhone 2019 camera

Max Weinbach, who claims to have sources close to Apple, revealed some more details about the photographic sector. According to what has been revealed, beyond the "normal" camera and the telephoto lens with 2X zoom, the third lens will be an ultra-wide 120° angle of view lens (as already anticipated by Ming-Chi Kuo).

But above all it seems that the cameras will be one of the strengths of the new iPhone 2019: Weinbach's source says that it will be one of the biggest generational leaps and that iPhone 11 photos will be better than anything made by Google, Samsung or Huawei. Particular attention will be given to the smart HDR mode, thanks to a new software processing system possible by the coupling between the new Apple A13 chip and the new operating system, iOS 13.

CompareRaja has also revealed some details about the cameras on the new iPhone 2019: according to reports, two of the three rear cameras will be 10 megapixels and 14 megapixels. There are also new features for the front camera, which could go from 7 megapixels to 10 or 12 megapixels.

3D camera? Not this year!

The presence of three cameras is confirmed in a previous report about the production of sensors for 3D cameras made by Sony. At first it was assumed that the potential of these new sensors could be implemented already in this year's models, but a recent report by Bloomberg suggests that 3D cameras could be officially launched on iPhone 2020.

In any case, the cameras in question will use a technology called Time of Flight, quite innovative in the mobile landscape: a laser emits a beam of light and the sensor monitors the time it takes the light to bounce on objects and go back. With this measurement, these 3D cameras can quickly create a three-dimensional mapping, with great results in face recognition and depth assessment.

Considering that in recent years Apple has invested heavily in augmented reality , the use of a 3D camera on the back (which would add to the True Depth front camera) would make sense.

USB-C

Cameras aside, one of the issues that is already much discussed is whether the new iPhone 2019 will use a USB-C connector. Apple has already been using USB-C on MacBooks for years and, after a long wait, the latest iPad Pro also uses a Type-C connector for charging. On the other hand, the new iPad mini and iPad Air still have a Lightning connector.

Another important issue is fast charging: currently, in order to benefit from the fast charge on iPhone, is to use a charger with proper wattage and USB-C connector, using a cable USB-C - Lightning.

In short, there are many good indications that the Cupertino company is really going to eliminate the Lightning connector definitively, in favor of the USB-C, but the decision seems not to be confirmed yet. An article on the famous Japanese portal Macotakara claims that Apple has not yet decided whether to adopt USB-C or Lightning, and that it is currently testing both connectors.

In this regard, even Bloomberg confermathat the company from Cupertino is testing iPhone with Type-C, but we can not yet give for sure that will be used precisely this connector.

Notch smaller?

One hypothesis that was circulated a few months ago is that the iPhone 2019 would have had a smaller notch. This would have been possible thanks to a new chip produced by AMS, Austrian company that fonds sensors for the True Depth camera and that recently announced a new technology that will include infrared proximity sensor and brightness sensor behind the OLED display.

iPhone 2019 notch

However, the latest rumors do not support this hypothesis: according to Max Weinbach of XDA, the notch will not be smaller. However, the Face ID will be improved and will have a wider viewing angle.

Weinbach also says that the display of the new iPhone 2019 could also work underwater.

5G

Among the other possible novelties under discussion is the possible adoption of a 5G modem: however, at the moment it seems excluded that iPhone 11 may use a chip that supports this new standard. Although 5G trials are proceeding very quickly and in 2019 some large cities will already be able to benefit from the new connectivity, these will be isolated cases and it is unlikely that 5G will be widespread by the end of this year.

In this regard, it is not surprising that Apple has no interest in adopting new modems for the iPhone 2019: several reports have already confirmed that the first iPhone with 5G technology will arrive in 2020. Moreover, it seems that Intel has anticipated the production of its 5G modem to give Apple more time to test it properly, but the Cupertino-based company will not be able to start testing until mid-2019, which further confirms that iPhone XI will not support 5G.

iPhone XR2

We can reasonably say that in 2019 there will be a successor to the iPhone XR: according to the Wall Street Journal, the new "economic" variant will have two cameras (no longer just one like the previous model) but will keep the LCD display (unlike the other two iPhone 2019, which will have OLED).

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the iPhone 11 R will be available in six colours: green, yellow, red, black, lavender and white.

Dark Mode

According to Bloomberg (and widely anticipated), one of the most important innovations of iOS 13 will be the introduction of a Dark Mode, a mode that adopts dark colors for the system interface. In addition to mere aesthetic taste, this mode would make sense because it could lead to an improvement in autonomy (OLED displays consume less battery power to show black interfaces or with dark colors).

Release date and price

Obviously it's still too early to talk about when the new iPhone 2019 will be presented, but based on the habits of the Cupertino-based company we can make some reasonable predictions.

Apple introduces its new smartphones in September, usually during the second week and, in particular, on dates that orbit around September 10-12. In addition, new iPhones are usually presented on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, with pre-sales opening the following Friday.

Based on what has been said so far, we can venture that the iPhone 2019 could be presented on September 10, 2019, with pre-orders from September 13. Let us make it clear that this is, of course, pure speculation and that there is still no information on it.

There are no certain info about the price, but considering the important falls in the stock exchange of the company and, in general, the difficult situation of the smartphone market, we can hope that the cost will not rise compared to current models.
