New Mac Pro unveiled at WWDC 2019

Two years ago in April, Craig Federighi and Phil Schiller sat down with selected tech journalists and bloggers to chat out of the sewing box. That doesn't happen too often. Not really, because it's usually Apple's marketing policy not to comment on rumors about future products. Federighi and Schiller belong to the top management and are known in their roles. Phil Schiller is Apple's head of marketing. Federighi is responsible for software at Apple. In April 2017, they talk about hardware, the Mac Pro. More concretely the new edition of the Mac Pro planned by Apple, which is to appear in the coming year. That was last year. There hasn't been a new Mac Pro since. This is to change today in the WWDC 2019 keynote.
Federighi and Schiller outline a modular Mac Pro that can be extended and customized by the user. Actually a dream for pro users who want to add graphics cards and swap processor cards to keep up with technological developments. Not to be underestimated is also the demand for internal memory as interim storage for projects and the possibility of connecting several larger screens. The black bin of Mac Pro (2013) has some of the desirable features. The aluminum box of Mac Pro (2006 to 2012) has the other part of the features mentioned. The new Mac Pro comes in autumn 2019.
Mac Pro comes in autumn 2019
With the new Mac Pro the cheese grater returns. But in 2019, the aluminum case isn't simply perforated, but the design of the holes creates a case within the case that directs the air currents in the new Mac Pro past the processor and at the same time damps the background noise. 300 watts of waste heat from the new Intel Xeon processors with up to 28 cores give you an idea of what a new Mac Pro can do. Apple presents 1000 tracks of Logic audio and 8K video editing in real time. The new Mac Pro is a box of superlatives 2000 days after the black barrel. 12 DIMM slots allow up to 1.5 terabytes of RAM as 2933 megahertz ECC memory.
Eight PCI slots accept expansion cards. Up to four high-end graphics cards with 56 TFlops can be used in double width. Three PCI slots can be equipped with normal cards. A last PCI slot leads the standard interfaces to the outside. Two Thunderbolt 3s, two USB-As and a 3.5-millimeter audio are included. In addition, there are two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports and, as a special feature, four wheels on which the Mac Pro can be moved under the desk. Special configurations for server cabinets will also be available in autumn.
Pro Display XDR
The new Mac Pro includes a new Apple display called Pro Display XDR that connects to your Mac via Thunderbolt 3. On a diagonal of 32 inches, the display delivers a retina resolution of 6K, which corresponds to 6016 x 3364 pixels. In 10-bit colour depth, the display shows more than one billion colours and is designed for a luminosity of 1,600 Nits in continuous operation. The contrast is given as 1 million to 1.
The frame is 9 millimeters thick. The case incorporates the Mac Pro cooling fin design on the back. The display can be rotated from landscape format to portrait format, for example to display an iPad display for developers. The new Mac Pro can run up to six Pro Display XDR simultaneously. The screen area will then grow to up to 120 megapixels. A display costs 4,999 US dollars plus a stand for 999 US dollars and will also be available from Apple from autumn 2019.
A first conclusion
Thought in typical hardware cycles, the new Mac Pro was two years overdue. But the Mac Pro is not a product on which Apple's future depends. The target group for the Mac are developers who develop for iOS and thus iPhone and iPad. Apple's credibility depends more on the Mac Pro. Phil and Craig have their say in their buddies and fans. A new Mac Pro is not a Qi charging station that was designed as an Apple AirPower to outwit physical interference. AirPower fails because of physics. Mac Pro fails at best because of the metaphysics, because the "Pro" in many Apple products stands above all for higher prices. The iPad Pro, iMac Pro and Final Cut Pro are the best examples, and the Mac Pro is no exception. The standard system with 8-core Intel Xeon and 32 Gigabyte memory, a 256 Gigabyte SSD and the AMD Radeon Pro 580X graphics card will cost $5,999. That's about 7,200 euros.
