New smart watch algorithm: learn every step of your action

Scientists at the University of Sussex have developed a new algorithm that allows a smartwatch to detect and record every step of your action without having to tell you what to look for in advance.

Current smartwatches can identify a limited number of specific activities, including yoga and running, but these activities are programmed in advance.

This new method enables the technology to detect activity when activity occurs, not only during exercise, but also when brushing or cutting vegetables.

The algorithm can even track sedentary activity, such as whether you are lying or sitting down.

Dr Hristijan Gjoreski, of the University of Sussex, said: "current activity-recognition systems usually fail because they are limited to identifying a predefined set of activities, of course human activities are unrestricted and vary over time.

"here, we propose a new machine learning method that can detect new human activities in real time and is superior to the competitive method.

"the traditional model of 'clustering' comes together to estimate what a person has been doing and how long.

For example, you can cluster a series of continuous steps into walks. What they waver is that they do not consider pauses or interruptions in their activities, so two short stops of walking will be divided into three separate walks.

The algorithm tracks ongoing activities and pays close attention to the transition, as well as the activity itself. In the above example, it assumes that walk will continue after a brief pause, so the data is retained while the data is waiting.

Dr Daniel Roggen, head of the Sensor Research Technology Group at the University of Sussex, will speak at the British Science Festival in the era of wearable Technology on September 6. He added: "the smartwatches of the future will be able to better analyze and understand our activities by automatically discovering when we are involved in a new type of activity.
