Nintendo Switch upgraded edition with longer battery life will arrive in August

By  Goraud Mazanec 2019-07-18 378 0

As expected, Nintendo has introduced a new version of the original Nintendo Switch. The new model doesn't differ externally from the normal edition, but apparently has a more economical processor, so that longer battery life is achieved.

The fact that Nintendo would bring a revised switch to market had actually been clear for some time due to the documents deposited with dealers and the US Communications Commission (FCC), but now the new model is official. Nintendo now lists the improved switch with the model number HAC-001(01) on its US website and also mentions longer runtimes.

Externally, nothing changes for the buyers of the new edition game console, because it remains the same design, the same type of use and the same accessories. Internally, however, Nintendo has apparently made changes, although officially we are only talking about a longer battery life. The new edition, whose serial numbers begin with the letters XKW, is now to offer 4.5 to nine hours of battery life - depending on the game. With the older version, depending on the game title, it took between 2.5 and 6.5 hours, which could be played mobile without a power supply.

There is no official information about the changes inside the revised Switch, but it can be assumed that Nintendo is now using the same new Nvidia SoC that is also used in the Nintendo Switch Lite. This should be more energy efficient due to optimizations or a possible switch to a manufacturing process with a shrunken structure width, thus reducing the power consumption during use in favor of a longer battery life.

Although the new Nintendo Switch HAC-001(01) is already listed with the FCC, there are no concrete offers from dealers through whom interested customers could purchase the new model. If you want to buy a switch in the future, you better make sure that you get the new variant with its longer runtime.

At the same time, it must be assumed that the new version of Nintendo has eliminated the serious security gaps of the Nvidia Tegra X1 SoCs installed in the first generation of the switch together with the chip supplier. Experiments with Linux, Android and similar modifications are therefore probably no longer possible - at least for the time being.
