OnePlus 6T vs OnePlus 6: smaller notch, larger screen
We start off, as we often do, with the most obvious differences — the looks. While both phones features a metal frame and a slightly curved glass back, they are far from being the same on the outside.
First, the OnePlus 6T is bigger than its predecessor measuring 6.2 x 2.94 x 0.32 inches and weighs 185g (compared to the OnePlus 6 at 6.12 x 2.96 x 0.30 and weighing 177g). True, these are quite miniscule and you probably won't even notice them in everyday use.
There is one difference, however, that is quite notable and it concerns the notch. While both phones do feature one in order to achieve the bezel-less display look and feel, notch on the OnePlus 6T is a significantly smaller teardrop notch compared to the full-sized rectangular one on the OnePlus 6. So, for those who are not big fans of the notch or anyone looking for more screen real estate, this will be a very welcome upgrade. Another difference of note is that there is no fingerprint sensor on the back of the OnePlus 6T as it has been built into the screen. This makes for a smoother look and feel of the whole device, with just the cameras and the logo on the back panel.
Both phones are available in Midnight Black and Mirror Black, but you get additional color options with the OnePlus 6 — Amber Red and Silk White.
OnePlus 6T vs OnePlus 6: 86% screen-to-body ratio and higher resolution
The OnePlus 6T comes with a 6.41-inch 1080 x 2340 AMOLED display featuring 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The OnePlus 6, on the other hand, sports a slightly smaller 6.28-inch AMOLED screen with 1080 x 2280 resolution and aspect ratio of 19:9. Both phones sport the pixel density of 402 pixels per inch. You won't notice any big differences in quality between the phones — both are phablets and both offer an immersive media experience thanks to bezel-less screens.
Visually, however, the screen on the OnePlus 6T comes across as more impressive because of the smaller notch and the more favourable screen-to-body ratio of 86% (compared to 83.8% on the OnePlus 6).
The company has also announced that improvements have been made in brightness levels, chromatic accuracy and color ranges.
OnePlus 6T vs OnePlus 6: bigger battery and faster appwork
If you are expecting a big jump forward in processing power, don't shoot the messenger, but there isn't any. Both phones come with the Snapdragon 845 chipset and are available with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. You also get the choice between 128GB or 256GB of storage (there is an additional 64GB model for the OnePlus 6). Even the operating system is the same for the two devices: the OnePlus 6T comes with Android 9 Pie out of the box and the OnePlus 6, though shipping with Android Oreo, can now also be upgraded to Pie. With that, the OnePlus 6T may just be a taf faster than its predecessor thanks to the Smart Boost feature: app data for the most frequently used apps is pre-stored in the phone's memory, which allows to open them faster.
Plus, thanks to the in-screen fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 6T, some additional app shortcuts become available: you can press the display after the phone has been unlocked to bring up your favourite apps.
The battery is one aspect where a major upgrade can be seen. The OnePlus 6T comes with a 3,700mAh battery (compared to the 3,300mAh on the OnePlus 6). Both phones support fast charging, but you will need to resort to it less frequently with the OnePlus 6T's larger battery.
OnePlus 6T vs OnePlus 6: cameras, same but not the same
The cameras have remained the same — at least on the surface. You get the 16MP (primary sensor, f/1.7, optical image stabilisation, autofocus) + 20MP (secondary sensor, f/1.7, autofocus) combo on both phones. There is also the 16MP f/2.0 camera on the front.
With no changes on the outside, the camera on the OnePlus 6T has received some software upgrades. For instance, you get new modes like Studio Lighting and Nightscape, which make for better photos in less than ideal lighting conditions. The cameras on the OnePlus 6T have also been tweaked to better optimize for faces, text and food.
OnePlus 6T vs OnePlus 6: the price of the matter
The OnePlus 6T is said to be available in stores as of November 6 and will be priced at either $549 (6GB RAM + 128GB storage) or $579 (8GB RAM + 128GB storage). This is very close to the OnePlus 6 staring off at $529.
So, is the upgrade worth it?
Design-wise, the smaller notch is definitely a nice touch and, for some, an important improvement. The in-screen fingerprint sensor is a very convenient feature as well.
On the inside, not much is different (except for the battery) — but there are some minor tweaks that make the overall experience notably better.
