Oneplus 7 Pro review: strong hardware, good software

The Oneplus 7 Pro is superbly built: The phone proved to be robust and resistant to drops and impacts during the test phase. A metal frame connects the front to the back and adds stability to the device. The high quality is visible in many parts of the case: transitions go smoothly and seamlessly into one another, nothing wobbles unnecessarily, everything sits tight and interacts precisely with each other. The front and back side are made of glass, which is bent at the edges. Despite the glossy finish, the surface shows less fingerprints and greasy stains than other smartphones. This is primarily due to a grease-resistant layer of the Oneplus 7 Pro.
An IP-certified penetration protection against dust and water is missing the phone. However, the Oneplus 7 Pro is said to be completely dust and water resistant. One has only waived the paid tests, it says on demand. In contrast to the predecessor models, the Oneplus 7 Pro also holds out a dive in the water, rain and steam do not matter to the smartphone either.
With a display diagonal of 6.67 inches (16.94 inches), the Oneplus 7 Pro is one of the biggest smartphones of the year. Despite the thin edges, the quasi frameless design and the pop-up camera, the device with a weight of 206 g is quite unwieldy and heavy.
The Oneplus 7 Pro has the fingerprint sensor in the display, as well as the Oneplus 6T (test report) or the Huawei Mate 20 Pro (test report). The detection area is located in the lower quarter of the OLED display. If you lift the phone or move it slightly, a circle of papillary lines lights up in the display. In contrast to previous models, the reaction and Entsperrzeit is 66 percent shorter. The optical sensor is almost as fast as a conventional fingerprint sensor. On the left and right sides are other buttons such as on / off, volume rocker and Alert Slider, a bi-directional button for vibration and mute.
Oneplus brings the latest smartphone in a new color called Nebula Blue. It is a glass case that has a milky surface. Experience shows that such surface treatment is scratch resistant and durable. If you do not like the frosty look, you can choose Mirror Gray or Almond White. Oneplus refuses to use wireless charging despite the back of the glass this year and relies only on wired charging.
The manufacturer uses the Snapdragon 855 with 7 nm technology node in the Oneplus 7 Pro. The Qualcomm CPU has eight cores with a clock speed of up to 2.85 GHz. Depending on the equipment version, the device has 6, 8 or 12 GB of RAM as well as 128 or 256 GB of memory. Thus, the Oneplus 7 Pro works fast, smoothly and without delays; Software and hardware work well together. With everyday tasks such as writing news about Whatsapp and Co, streaming music or surfing the web, the Oneplus 7 Pro is as clear as playing high-resolution, detailed 3D games.
The top performance is noticeable both in daily use and in synthetic rating systems. In the Antutu benchmark, the Oneplus 7 Pro reaches a score of 377,000 points, which is a 10 percent increase over the Samsung Galaxy S10 + (review) with 340,000 points.
In the Vrmark Professional Edition, it reached 4954 points and is slightly behind the Huawei P30 Pro (review) with over 5000 points. High-resolution VR content was consistently reproduced by the Oneplus 7 Pro at 59 frames per second. The managed so far the fewest devices.
The present test device with 256 GB is the bottom line 212 GByte free for use. That corresponds to a share of 83 percent. The read and write speed of the internal memory was measured at 1140 MByte / s and 215, respectively. On a memory card slot Oneplus dispenses with the same as on a jack for 3.5 mm jack. If you like, the Oneplus 7 Pro uses a second Nano-SIM card, the dual-SIM function worked without problems in the test. The reception and the sound when telephoning were without abnormalities. The call quality is excellent. For audio playback, speakers with stereo sound are available.
The built-in battery of the Oneplus smartphone has a capacity of 4000 mAh, which is 21 percent more than its predecessor. For moderate and mixed use, the duration is two days. In the test with a continuously running video with maximum display brightness, the Oneplus 7 Pro has reached 15 hours on a single charge. That is really good. Wired charging with the 30 W quick charger takes an hour and 15 minutes. After 30 minutes, the battery is 61 percent.
In terms of display, the Oneplus 7 Pro sets new standards: Once again, the manufacturer uses OLED technology. This time, however, comes a refresh rate of 90 Hz, instead of the usual 60 Hz. The performance increase brings one thing in particular: a fluid movement on the display. Especially with games or fast animations, the effect is clearly visible. Not all apps support the high refresh rate and default to 60 Hz. The resolution of 3120 × 1440 pixels is also high and ideal for a screen with a diagonal of 6.67 inches (about 17 cm). At a total representation of 4.49 million pixels, the dot density is sufficient 515 ppi. Colors and measured brightness of 589 cd / m² are outstanding.
The camera of the Oneplus 7 Pro has already tested our sister, the c't magazine, with a very good result. See: Oneplus 7 Pro: More cameras, more display.
In the software shows Oneplus, what it is known in the scene: The Oneplus 7 Pro runs on Oxygen OS, the underlying operating system is Android 9 Pie. The system is up to date; The security patch is from March 1, 2019.
Equipped with everything that is important and correct, Oneplus equips the device with an extraordinarily clear and clean surface. It convinces with clean lines and modern typography. The system is fast and intuitive, yet powerful. In the settings, the user will find many useful features such as the gesture control or the duplication of apps. With the latter, multiple instances of applications can be created, for example, two Whatsapp for two different numbers.
With the Oneplus 7 Pro, the eponymous manufacturer launches a really well-equipped smartphone. The strengths include the bright, colorful and fluid display with 90 Hz, the strong hardware and the fast and streamlined operating system. But those who value compactness and lightness should avoid the Oneplus 7 Pro. The camera of the smartphone is good, as the test of c't shows. However, it is not special and can not compete with Google Pixel or Huawei P30 in terms of low light.
If you like the large display without a notch (Kaufberatung: The Notch and its alternatives), the Oneplus 7 Pro should take a closer look. Alternatively, the slightly cheaper Oneplus 7 will soon be available. It will be smaller, lighter and will not have a pop-up camera.
