OnePlus 7 review: Only a faster OnePlus 6T?

By  Daniel Camilo 2019-05-25 465 0

The technology world is currently looking spellbound on the newly introduced OnePlus 7 Pro, due to the borderless display and other special features. But what about the normal OnePlus 7? What innovations the cheaper model of the new smartphone series offers, we show you in the short test.

After the presentation of the OnePlus 7 series, we were able to take a closer look at the regular OnePlus 7. At first glance, it can easily be confused with its predecessor, the OnePlus 6T. In contrast to the exotic Pro model, the manufacturer has made only detail improvements to the new OnePlus 7, which we list below.

OnePlus 7

Design and display of the OnePlus 7

The dimensions of 158 x 75 x 8 millimeters, and the weight of about 182 grams are the same as the last OnePlus smartphone from 2018. Again, the frame is made of aluminum and the back of glass. There is no longer a variant in matt black - the only available color in Germany is now Mirror Gray, a shiny dark gray.

USB-C, the three-level Alert Slider, the dual-SIM slot are available again. New is the wider speaker slot on the upper screen frame. In combination with the speaker on the underside, it ensures stereo sound. The USB-C port also provides USB 3.0 transfer speeds instead of slower USB 2.0 as before.

Under the ear cup speaker is the well-known water drop notch for the front camera. It resolves again with 16 megapixels, but the sensor is not identical to its predecessor.

However, the AMOLED display is identical. It is 6.4 inches tall and resolves in Full HD + (2,340 x 1,080 pixels). This was already bright and rich in contrast last year, but compared to the rimless screen of the OnePlus 7 Pro, the "wow effect" is simply missing.

The smartphone can be unlocked either with the fingerprint sensor integrated in the display or via face recognition. The fingerprint sensor should be able to unlock in just 0.21 seconds.

Equipment of the OnePlus 7

Under the hood, there are two improvements that benefit the speed of the smartphone. The processor is now no longer a Snapdragon 845, but a Snapdragon 855. The current and powerful Qualcomm chip is currently the fastest on the Android market.

There are no changes in memory selection. You get the OnePlus 7 either with six gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of device memory or with eight or 256 gigabytes. The device memory belongs to the brand new generation UFS 3.0. Compared to UFS 2.1 memory this offers much faster read and write speeds. The two OnePlus 7 models are the first in the world to have the new memory.

OnePlus 7 with new dual camera

There are two cameras on the back, but OnePlus has replaced the sensors. The main sensor does not resolve at 16, but with 48 megapixels and is identical to the Pro model. The optically stabilized primary camera relies on pixel binning, which is why the photos ultimately resolve with 12 megapixels. The second sensor is again used only to acquire depth information and has recently a resolution of five megapixels.

The wide-angle and telephoto cameras are reserved for the OnePlus 7 Pro. Unfortunately, we could not test the camera of the normal OnePlus 7 in London, because the main sensor is identical on both smartphones, you can see the first photos in the gallery of the Pro model. A speedy update will improve the quality of the camera even more.

Price and availability of the OnePlus 7

The OnePlus 7 will be released in June from 559 euros. For that you get the variant with 128 gigabyte storage space. The variant with 256 gigabytes and eight gigabytes of RAM costs 609 euros. The similar predecessor is sold in the basic equipment for 549 euros.

First conclusion to the OnePlus 7

In summary, the OnePlus 7 is just a minimal upgrade from last year's 6T. The focus of the new series was definitely on the Pro model, the regular OnePlus 7 is aimed more at fans who want to replace a much older model (5T and down), but do not want to pay the proud price of the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The overall package is round and it's a particularly fast smartphone - but the manufacturer misses the opportunity to get back the Xiaomi-stolen flagship killer title with a lower price.
