OPPO Find X vs. Vivo NEX: the battle of bezel-less screens

By  GB Blog Official 2018-07-26 8583 0

We knew it. We knew it the moment we first saw a pop-up selfie cam on a smartphone. We knew that we were witnessing the birth of a trend. And while the Oppo Find X takes quite a different approach to camera movement than the Vivo NEX, a new page in the book of bezel-less smartphones has been turned.

Find X vs. Vivo NEX: which phone has a better display?

It's hard to compare the two phones without going into battle on which one has thinner bezels. After all, both devices compete for the title of the "all-screen smartphone".

The Vivo Nex comes with one of the largest screens we've seen on a smartphone to date — a 6.59 inch display with 2316 x 1080 pixels. The Oppo Find X, on the other hand, sports a slightly smaller 6.42 inch AMOLED screen with full HD resolution.

OPPO Find X vs. Vivo NEX: design

With that, when it comes to screen-to-body ratio, the Oppo Find X takes the cake. By getting rid not only of the upper camera panel but also almost eliminating side bezels (the phone's top bezel is just 0.07 inches, side bezels are a mere 0.06 inches and the bottom chin measures some 0.13 inches) and creating a stunning "overflowing screen effect", the Oppo Find X has reached an unprecedented 98.3% screen-to-body ratio (compared to the 91.24% screen-to-body ratio on the Vivo Nex).

With that said, the screen on the Oppo find X is just that — a screen. On the Vivo Nex, on the other hand, the screen is hiding the in-display fingerprint sensor as well as a speaker, which definitely makes things quite a bit more fun.

OPPO Find X vs. Vivo NEX: where are the cameras hiding?

Just like the Nex, the Oppo Find X has also gone notch-less and adopted the pop-up camera feature. But quite in a different way.

The Vivo Nex has its selfie cam hidden within the top panel — the camera reveals itself whenever you need to take a selfie by "escaping" from within the phone with the help of a micro motor.

The Oppo Find X takes things to a new level. The phone has the whole camera panel (housing all the three cameras) rising out of the top of the handset. Just like with the Nex, the cameras appear and disappear in less than a second —  so there should be no worries about the process taking too much time.

The phones' protruding cameras, however, lead to the same two concerns:

● the camera movement will alert those around you that you are about to take a photo. Not a big deal — but something to keep in mind for those with a reporter within

● There are a lot of additional moving parts — and this could potentially make the phones more prone to damage

So what are the cameras themselves like?

As we've mentioned in our full Vivo Nex review (can add link here), the phone comes with rather modest cam specs: the selfie cam is just 8MP while the rear cam setup is the rather standard 12.0MP + 5.0MP. That said, what the cameras lack in hardware is made up by the software:4-axis image stabilization, 1.4-micrometer pixel sensors and an f/1.8 aperture.

Vivo NEX back camera

The Oppo find X takes the camera game more seriously. On the back, you get a primary 16MP sensor alongside a 20MP secondary sensor with optical image stabilization. The setup is great for the creating a beautiful Bokeh effect — blurring the background in your close-up photos. AI scene recognition is also included helping the camera identify 21 different scenarios and automatically adjust shooting settings for the optimal result.

The selfie shooter is also a winner over the Vivo Nex. Instead of the modest 8MP front cam, you get a 25MP camera complete with a 3D modeling feature, which also enables the phone's facial recognition feature (more on that later).

Thus, when it comes to the cameras, the Oppo Find X speeds confidently ahead of the Vivo Nex.

OPPO Find X vs. Vivo NEX: CPU, storage and extras

Here, things even out a bit. Both phones come with the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 Octa Core processor and both offer the option of complementing that with an impressive 8GB of RAM. You might wonder if you are ever actually going to use that much RAM on a phone — and that's something only you can have the answer two.

But, where it definitely does pay off, is when you consider how smooth Android 8.1will be running on your phone — both the Oppo Find X and the Vivo Nex sport the latest UI.

We've mentioned earlier that the Oppo Find X misses a fingerprint sensor. While the Vivo Nex has managed to pack one in neatly right underneath the screen, Oppo have decided to do away with the idea completely. Instead, you get the feature called O-Face, which is basically the company's own take on facial recognition.

Battery-wise, you get the 4,000mAh battery on the Nex and the 3,730mAh battery sealed inside the Find X. The latter also throws in the fast-charge option for a quick boost when in a hurry.

OPPO Find X vs. Vivo NEX: the verdict

Both smartphones take the idea of bezel-less design to new and very impressive heights. They share the same ambition but differ in the way the idea was executed. And while both takes on the dream are more than worthy of applause, we feel like the Oppo Find X takes a more comprehensive approach with its powerful camera offering. Then again, it's not free — the 8GB RAM + 256GB ROM version of the device starts at a steep $1,100 (compared to just over $700 for the 8GB RAM +128GB ROM Vivo Nex).

The choice, as always, is all yours. And whatever you decide, you will be holding a piece of innovation history in your hands.
