OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition vs. Huawei P30 Pro: design
The new OPPO Reno joins the league of smartphones that have designed their screens away from the notch and have instead opted for the pop-up front camera setup. This is not new for the mobile market and not even for the company itself — last year’s OPPO Find X, for instance, had its camera placed on a panel that slid out from inside the phone.
This time, however, OPPO are trying out a new variation: Reno’s front cam is hiding in a pop-out wedge instead of the now popular miniature square pop-ups. This could be a better design option for a number of reasons: the wedge cam setup seems sturdier than most other pop-ups we’ve seen and the wedge probably catches less dust or grit.
The phone comes with a 6.6 inch AMOLED display (sporting 2340 x 1080 resolution) with Gorilla Glass 6 protection on top.
As for the color options, the OPPO Reno is available in Fog Sea Green and Extreme Night Black.
Th Huawei P30 Pro comes with a more "classic" design: there are no cameras popping out from inside the phone. Instead, the phone sports a tiny notch and an in-display fingerprint sensor. This combo has allowed the phone to approach to the all-screen display look without employing complicated mechanisms.
The P30 Pro features a 6.47 inch screen, also protected by Gorilla Glass and is offered in Black, Pearl White, Aurora, Amber Sunrise and Breathing Crystal.
OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition vs. Huawei P30 Pro: insides
The Huaweu P30 Pro runs on the Kirin 980 CPU — according to Huawei, this is the first 7nm AI chipset coming with the dual NPU design and supporting LTE Cat. 2.1. The strong processor is paired with an impressive 8GB of RAM and three storage options: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.
The OPPO Reno uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 CPU; you will be able to choose between either 6GB or 8GB of RAM and there are 128GB and 256GB internal storage options.
AnTuTu gave the OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition with 6GB 369,254 points, which is not particularly impressive and within the range of other smartphones sporting the same processor. The Huawei P30 Pro, however, has received a lower score of 309,056 points. With that, it should be noted that both smartphones have scored better than 98% of mobiles on AnTuTu.
OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition vs. Huawei P30 Pro: cameras
This is probably the most interesting part of this comparison.
We previously talked quite a bit about Huawei P30 Pro’s cameras — and for a reason. The phone’s cameras have earned it the number one spot on the DxOMark chart with 112 points. The P30 Pro even surpassed flagships like the Galaxy S10 Plus and its own predecessors: the Huawei P20 and the Huawei P20 Pro.
So why did the phone rank so highly?
On the back, the Huawei P30 Pro comes with four cameras: there is a 40MP primary sensor with an f/1.6 aperture; a 20MP ultra-wide lens with an f/2.2 aperture and an 8MP zoom sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. Additionally, there is the Time of Flight (TOF) sensor onboard. One of the main features of the Huawei P30 Pro’s cameras, however, is the 5x zoom (in addition to the 50x digital zoom).
So, how does the OPPO Reno10x Optical Zoom Edition compare? Part of the answer is in the name of the phone itself.
The phone’s rear camera comes equipped with a 10x hybrid optical zoom lens attached to its 13MP sensor. In addition to the 13MP sensor, there is the 48MP primary lens with Optical Image Stabilization. Plus, there is the Ultra Clear Night View 2.0 mode and an 8MP 120-degree wide angle lens with Dual OIS.
We have yet to wait and see how DxOMark reacts to the OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom edition. But what we are seeing now is that both smartphones are pushing the boundaries of what smartphone cameras are capable of.
On the front, the OPPO Reno comes with a 16MP selfie cam with an LED light. The Huawei P30 Pro gives you more pixels on the front: 32MP.
OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition vs. Huawei P30 Pro: battery
The OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition comes with a 4,065mAh battery and there is the support for OPPO’s VOOC 3.0 super fast charging onboard.
The Huawei P30 Pro packs a 4,200mAh battery, which is one of the largest capacity batteries among the phone’s rivals. The phone also supports fast charging and you will find a 40W SuperCharge adapter in the box, which can get the phone from 0% to 70% in just 30 minutes. The P30 Pro also support wireless charging.
OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition vs. Huawei P30 Pro: price and availability
The Huawei P30 Pro starts at about $900 while the OPPO Reno 10x Optical Zoom Edition has been priced at about $600 for the 6GB RAM version and goes up to over $700 for the 8GB version with 256GB of storage.
Which phone should you go for?
Once again, it’s not that simple. We are intrigued by OPPO’s design innovations and with the addition of powerful cameras, Reno’s value for money offer is definitely strong.
With that, the Huawei P30 Pro would be a more "certain" bet of the two, having been ranked at the best camera phone and taking into account Huawei’s long-standing reputation for quality devices.
