OPPO Reno 10X Zoom gets an update with 60x digital zoom

By  Felicity Rosa 2019-05-11 373 0

Oppo, one of the most active Chinese manufacturers (but less renowned in our region than Huawei and Xiaomi), has just unveiled two new smartphones: the Reno and the Reno 10x zoom. The latter has not failed to attract our curiosity, as it is equipped with a periscopic optical zoom... a feature that we had already seen on Huawei's latest product, the P30 Pro. While the photo part is still one of the few differentiating aspects of smartphones, is the super-zoom about to become the next revolution for mobile photography?

Oppo Reno 10x zoom

Oppo Reno 10x zoom: 6x stabilized optical zoom and 10x hybrid zoom

Like many recent high-end smartphones, such as the latest Samsung Galaxy S10, LG V40 and G8 Thinq or Huawei P30 and P30 Pro, the Oppo Reno 10x zoom features a particularly versatile back module with a wide focal length: a main sensor of 48 million pixels topped by a stabilized wide-angle optic (28 mm equivalent) with f/1.7 aperture, an 8 million pixel sensor with an ultra-wide-angle lens (16 mm equivalent) and opening at f/2.2... and a 13 million pixel sensor with a stabilized "periscopic" zoom x6 equivalent to 160 mm.

The "periscopic" zoom is particularly innovative. The lenses are mounted perpendicular to the back of the camera, and the camera plays on the position of the lenses to adjust the zoom level. This device should allow the Oppo Reno 10x zoom to better capture very distant subjects.

This 6x zoom is extended by a 10x "hybrid" zoom, whose operation is particularly similar to that of the Huawei P20 Pro, Mate 20 Pro and P30 Pro. This super zoom is based on the combined use of the 48 million pixel sensor and the x6 optical zoom, in order to reconstruct the details of the image in x10 zoom. This technique is supposed to be more qualitative than the "classic" digital zoom (which tends to greatly degrade image quality) but, on Huawei's previous cameras, it tended to generate images that were not very useful. It remains to be seen whether the Reno 10x's "hybrid" zoom is up to its expectations.

Sony 48MP Quad Bayer Sensor

Finally, let us note that this 48 MP sensor is not unknown to us: it is the Sony IMX 586, which we had already crossed on the Honor View 20 or on the recent Xiaomi Mi 9. This sensor is 1/2 inch (8 mm wide), much larger than the sensors usually found on our smartphones. Each pixel of this sensor is only 8 nanometers long, so poor performance in low light conditions could be a concern.

However, this sensor is based on stacked CMOS technology, and is of the "quad bayer" type, which is based on a matrix grouping process: the contiguous pixels are thus grouped into a single one. The actual pixel height is 1.6 nanometers, which allows this sensor to reach (theoretically) a dynamic range four times higher than other smartphone sensors. Sony also highlights the combination of adjacent pixels to achieve better sensitivity... and thus reduce the occurrence of digital noise.

Oppo highlights the performance of this Sony sensor by offering an "Ultra Night Mode 2.0" mode. Like the night shot mode of the Google Pixel 3 or the Huawei P30 Pro, this mode aims to deliver night shots of a much higher quality, offering a rendering close to a reflex.

Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB of large 6.6-inch OLED borderless OLED display RAM

The Oppo Reno 10x zoom also features a (very) large OLED display with no "only" 6.6 inch borders. It should also be noted that there is a fingerprint sensor integrated into the screen. To avoid the installation of a notch, the manufacturer uses a thin tab that unfolds like a shark fin - and houses the 16 million pixel front photo module. The storage capacity is 256 GB, expandable with a micro-SD card (up to 256 GB). On the software side, Android 9 Pie is equipped with the Color OS 6.0 home overlay.

The whole system is powered by a Snapdragon 855 processor coupled with 8GB of RAM. This processor would allow the Oppo Reno 10x zoom to capture 4K video at 60 fps... where the Huawei P30 Pro only captures 4K at 30 fps.

Technical specifications of the Oppo Reno 10x zoom:

▪ Display: OLED, 6.6 inches

Oppo Reno and Reno 5G: the twin brothers of the Reno 10x zoom... some details

The Oppo Reno is a more classic version of the Reno 10x zoom. Its screen is "only" 6.4 inches, but keeps the shark fin notch and the fingerprint reader integrated in the display. Finally, let us note the absence of the x10 periscopic zoom.

Oppo Reno and Reno 5G

The Reno 5G is based on the technical basis of the Reno 10x Zoom... but is equipped with a 5G chip. The Chinese brand has also entered into several partnerships with various European operators (Swisscom, EE), and this model would thus be the first 5G compatible phone to be available in Europe.

Prices and availability

The "classic" Oppo Reno will be available in France from May 10 at around €500. The Oppo Reno 5G (with the same periscopic zoom as Reno 10x zoom) will be launched in the same month, and will cost about 900 €. Finally, the Oppo Reno 10x zoom will be available in early June at around €800 (€200 less than the P30 Pro).
