Qualcomm: New chips will make Windows ARM PCs more cheaper

By  Adeline Kuang 2019-06-05 413 0

ARM-based laptops with Windows 10 or Chrome OS are still a rarity. Although there are now some devices based on Snapdragon processors with Windows 10 on ARM, their prices are still relatively high. However, if Qualcomm is the place to be, this will soon change. In an interview with tech journalist Myriam Joire on the Mobile Tech Podcast, Don McGuire, vice president of global product marketing for Qualcomm, said there will soon be cheaper notebooks and 2-in-1 tablets using Snapdragon series ARM processors.

ARM laptops and 2-in-1 devices to become cheaper

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx has recently laid the groundwork for further development, but in order to make Snapdragon-based devices with Windows 10 and Chrome OS more widely available to users, Qualcomm wants to help push prices down. Currently, Snapdragon PCs with Windows are still relatively expensive, but this will change within the next few months.

For example, McGuire announced the introduction of new ARM chips from Qualcomm to serve lower price points. Ultimately, it is a matter of serving all price categories in a range from about 300 US dollars, with which one then clearly moves into a segment that is traditionally served by Chromebooks. This is the only way to increase the number of systems on the market and ultimately also to promote interest among software providers.

New chips make it possible

Qualcomm therefore intends to introduce several new platforms "in the coming months" that will enable cheaper Snapdragon laptops and 2-in-1 devices. Although the Snapdragon 8cx will continue to be seen as a "guiding light", the road map will "soon" be filled with chips like a possible Snapdragon "7cx" to enable devices in price segments between 300 and beyond 800 dollars.

There will probably then be some device manufacturers who will choose to use one of the new, cheaper platforms to implement hardware designs based on it, which can be equipped with both Windows and Chrome OS. Similar to other low-cost Intel-based notebooks, there will soon be cheaper Snapdragon laptops that will be available with both Windows and Chrome OS, McGuire continued.

Developers want mass - Office comes, Google still adorns itself

For medium-term success, it is now important to persuade developers to compile their applications for the new ARM platforms. This has now become so simple that one can expect native ARM variants of many popular applications within a very short time and with little effort. Among other things, it is practically certain that Microsoft is already working at full speed to make the normal desktop versions of its Office apps fit for native use on Snapdragon CPUs.

Meanwhile, McGuire says the chances of an official Chrome version of Google for use on Windows 10 on ARM platforms are still uncertain. Google has reduced the size of the team and there are many unclear signals from the Internet company's headquarters in Mountain View. Since the number of ARM-based notebooks is still quite manageable, Google still lacks incentives. With the availability of cheaper Snapdragon laptops and the resulting increase in the number of devices sold, this will hopefully change, according to the Qualcomm manager.
