Razer Hammerhead TWS earphones: delay as low as 60 milliseconds

By  Adan Flannigan 2019-10-30 892 0

Razer, which has always been characterized by its focus on the gamma world, has introduced its first wireless headphones that promise to solve the problem of latency in headphones as well. Razer's Hammerheads are presented as an alternative to Apple's AirPods, Amazon Echo Buds or Google Pixel Buds. However, in principle with better synchronization than all the previous ones. It is price at €119.99.

Wireless headset centered on gammers

Most manufacturers have focused on improving autonomy or adding voice assistants, Razer seeks to improve connectivity. This is the main characteristic of Razer's Hammerheads, their reduced latency.

This is a true wireless headset, which means that there is no cable in between and therefore they have 100% wireless connectivity. Using Bluetooth 5.0 and Razer's own technology, they achieve a latency of less than 60ms when the headphones are in "gamming mode". This mode is activated by an app for the smartphone and in principle makes the audio synchrony between smartphone and headphones much faster.

Razer indicates that the technology they use together with Bluetooth 5.0 allows the gamming mode not to deteriorate the audio quality and maintain the autonomy of the headphones. This generates some doubts, if it doesn't really consume more resources why isn't this mode always active? As always, we will have to see how they behave in practice and not only in theory.

The Razer Hammerhead follows in the footsteps of other wireless headphones already on the market. A design popularized by Apple AirPods in 2016 and used by other manufacturers over the last few years. The headphones have an elongated "stick" and an internal shape that adapts in a certain way to the physiognomy of the ear. They are not in-ear as such, i.e. they are rigid and do not have pads. But they do come with a series of silicone "sleeves" to have a better grip and fit each person's ear.

The charging case allows you to charge them wirelessly when they are inside. The case is charged via a USB-C connection. In terms of colors, come a dark gray almost black and with the classic logo in radioactive green Razer. In terms of controls, Razer's headphones allow you to pause or play the audio and activate the smartphone's voice wizard. To change the volume, however, you will need to use the phone.

Resistance and autonomy in the Razer Hammerherad

Razer's Hammerhead headphones have an IPX4 water resistance as indicated by the manufacturer. In other words, the IP standard says they allow liquid splashes from any angle without damaging the earpiece. Liquids also include sweat apart from water for example, so they can be a good choice when doing sport.

The battery seems to be one of the big hiccups of these wireless headphones. Razer indicates that the Hammerhead's autonomy is three hours of use per charge. In addition, the case offers four extra loads. Therefore, a total of 15 hours of autonomy would be achieved. There is no indication of whether they have any kind of rapid charge to get certain autonomy in any hurry. It is also not entirely clear whether the three hours of autonomy are with or if the gamming mode is activated.

Razer Hammerhead price and availability

Razer's Hammerdead headphones cost 119.99 euros. There are no different versions, so the price is unique and also the color of the headphones. 119.99 euros seems a consistent price to your specifications if we take into account the price of other wireless headphones on the market.
