Redmi 7 review: a new budget smartphone killer offering great specs for just over $100

By  GB Blog Official 2019-03-19 1637 0

China’s number one budget smartphone maker, Xiaomi, released their two new flagships, the Redmi 7 and the Redmi Note 7 Pro, on March 18th. The Redmi 7, priced just a bit over $100, aims to be the company’s new budget bestseller sporting not one but a whole batch of upgrades including a trendy gradient design, a dot-notch display, and more. But we are greedy and eager to know what else we are getting for the very attractive price tag

Redmi 7: stylish design with a gradient back + a standard headphone jack

The Redmi 7 features a rather large 6.26-inch screen with a dot notch — this means that you are getting plenty of uninterrupted screen space (84% screen-to-body ration), disrupted only by the phone’s bottom chin. The display itself comes with HD+ 720 x 1,520 resolution and 19:9 aspect ratio. Plus, it is protected by Gorilla Glass 5.

Redmi 7 stylish design

The phone comes with a polycarbonate body and measures 62.5 x 30 x 3.3 inches. There is a fashionable gradient colour finish on the back. The phone weighs about 180 grams and is available in black, red and blue color options. The Redmi 7 has kept the headphone jack — so you won’t need to be spending extra on wireless gear. For data protection, there is a fingerprint sensor on the back — as well as the option for facial recognition via the phone’s front AI-empowered cam.

Redmi 7: what’s on the inside

Redmi 7 runs on the Snapdragon 632 processor, provides a wide range of choice of memory, and a big battery capacity.

Redmi 7 CPU

The Redmi 7 runs on the Snapdragon 632 processor, a mid-range 64-bit CPU fabricated on Samsung's 14nm process and featuring eight Kryo 250 silver high-efficiency cores clocked at  1.8 GHz.

Redmi 7 memory combo

You get several options when it comes to RAM + ROM combos. The phone’s top version sports 4GB of RAM with 64GB of inbuilt storage. If you are happier with less, you also get the choice of 2GB RAM +16GB of storage  and 3GB RAM +32GB of storage combos. Whichever option you go with, you will have the possibility to expand the internal storage further via the hybrid SIM slot that supports up to 512GB of extra space. Software-wise, the phone runs on Android 9 Pie customised with Xiaomi’s signature MIUI 10.

Redmi 7 battery

There is a 4,000mAh battery inside the Redmi 7. But, according to Xiaomi, it’s not only about the hardware. Thanks to AI smart power saving features, the phone is said to be capable of astounding 400 hours of standby time. The phone comes with the standard 5V2A charger — unfortunately (but understandably) there is no super fast charging or wireless charging options onboard.

The Redmi 7’s other base features include dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, microUSB 2.0, and an IR blaster.

Redmi 7: dual cameras on the back + a selfie shooter with AI facial recognition

The Redmi 7 is not a camera phone — but it’s a phone with good cameras. On the back, the phone features a dual camera setup: a 12MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a 2MP secondary sensor to assist. There is a PDAF (phase detection auto focus) onboard and the phone’s back camera can record 1080p videos at 30 or 60 frames per second.

Redmi 7 cameras

On the front, there is an 8MP selfie shooter hidden in the miniature notch and featuring all Xiaomi’s favorites: AI Portrait Mode and AI Smart Beauty. There is also gesture control for photo taking and you have the option of unlocking the phone through AI facial recognition.

Redmi 7: the verdict

So, how do we sum things up here? So far, the Redmi 7 does seem like it’s going to live up to the hype. The phone offers a strong pack of features even for a mid-range device, but the starting price for the base model of the Redmi 7 actually puts the phone way below the mid-range price category. For a $100 phone, the Redmi 7 is an impressive device and, once again, the value-for-money offer on Xiaomi’s side is hard to beat.

The Redmi 7 is now available for pre-order and will be officially released on the Chinese market on  March 26th.
