Samsung Galaxy fold: iFixit analyzes broken screen problems

By  Linky Johnson 2019-04-25 120 0

The Samsung Galaxy fold was pushed back, the fault to screens already breaking in the hands of the first testers. iFixit, well known for its dismounts in good standing, today offers its own analysis of events that have led to such problems.

Is there a major problem with the Samsung Galaxy fold? The first returns seemed good, until several American journalists reported broken screens.

For the most part, this was a human problem: they removed a filter that should not be removed. But for others, there were no human errors: the Smartphone is involved. While Samsung delayed the release of its Smartphone, iFixit — well known for its restorative and disassembler skills — looks at the engineering of the foldable Smartphone to determine the causes of the problem.

iFixit offers us its analysis of the Galaxy fold

Firstly, the site wishes to recall a basic fact, but important: the OLED screens are inherently fragile. This slab technology is very sensitive to oxygen, mold, and a protective layer is therefore very important to have on it. Especially, the edges of these screens are the most fragile, and any misdirected pressure can have a considerable impact on their longevity.

Having an OLED slab device is described by iFixit as having "a small white room that is transported". This makes it easier to understand why removing the protective film from the Galaxy fold has caused so much damage.

"You hold it badly"

Who remembers the antennagate of the iPhone 4S, with Steve Jobs stating that the users "had trouble" their Smartphone? For the love of humor, we would almost be tempted to bring this together with the Galaxy fold.

Indeed, one last point is raised by iFixit: the fact that users close all their Galaxy fold differently. Samsung has thoroughly tested the opening/closing cycles of its latest product, but through robots always repeating the same gesture, with the same force spread across the sides of the slab.

This is not the case for users. To close it, the first testers tend to press the center of the screen, or on the corner of it, or open it in the manner of a book, the two thumbs applying the user's strength on a single concentrated point.

So pre-pack this Samsung Galaxy fold

Finally, iFixit notes one last small detail: the screen of the Samsung Galaxy fold does not seem designed with the Central fold directly made on the screen, for aesthetic reasons. As a result, the first openings/closures cause more tension and adaptation to the slab and the Smartphone.

To compensate for this fact, they indicate that the slab would need a little free space in order to be able to adapt more freely to this tension. That is not necessarily the case here.

That's all the analysis that iFixit experts offer us. Samsung now recovering test models for analysis, we bet they will draw the right conclusions about these first defects spotted.
