Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 vs. Apple iPad Air: which wins?

By  Sigismondo Eisenhower 2019-08-08 7183 0

August 7 Samsung released Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 , an updated and modern Android tablet with an elegant design, a powerful flagship processor and some great performance-oriented features. However Apple iPad - this is what most people think about the best tablets. Although not the most powerful model in the line, iPad Air is powerful, stylish and affordable. The clash between Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 and Apple iPad Air is inevitable. So which choice is best for you?

Performance, battery life and charging

The Galaxy Tab S6 has fixed one of the oldest bugs in Android tablets - finally, it comes with a flagship processor. The Snapdragon 855 runs on the new Samsung tablet and provides unrivalled performance. But is it equal to the Aion Bionic iPad A12 processor? Tests say no, the A12 Bionic has a small advantage on the Snapdragon 855, but it's definitely close.

Well, what about the battery? The iPad has a bigger advantage than a Tab S6 with a much higher capacity, but it is not yet known whether this will lead to a significant overall battery life. Apple requires 10 hours of battery life from Apple Air, while Samsung says it will take you 15 hours to charge the Tab S6. But there's a big gap in the charging speed. With the USB-C port, the Tab S6 offers faster charging right out of the gate, while you'll need to buy a quick charging kit for your iPad Air.

Although there are signs of superiority on both sides, we still lack the gap to call it.

Design and durability

While the frame on the S6 tab is undoubtedly modern - echoing the iPad Pro - the iPad Air is something of a return to old times, with a thick frame and a slightly dull design. It has its advantages as a Touch ID, but in general we prefer the more modern look of the Galaxy Tab S6. The Samsung tablet is also lighter than the Air tablet, and thanks to its reduced frame it is also smaller. There is a fingerprint scanner even if it is not an ultrasonic scanner like the Galaxy S10. There is even room for magnetic storage of your S Pen.

No device is waterproof, so be careful while you are by the pool. But both have metal structures that must be strong enough. Obviously, the opposite day has come, as you will find a headphone jack on your Apple device, but not on your Samsung device.

Despite the lack of a headphone jack, the Samsung tablet certainly looks better than the iPad.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Both tablets are equipped with 10.5-inch displays, but the main technology is different. The iPad Air's LCD display has a resolution of 2224 x 1668 pixels, which corresponds to 265 pixels per inch. It's a good display and looks great. But is it as good as a Tab S6 panel? The Tab S6 uses one of Samsung's own Super AMOLED displays with a resolution of 2,560 x 1600 pixels and a definition of 287 pixels per inch. It's not that far from the iPad Air, but it's Samsung technology that proves its superiority. The Super AMOLED displays a much deeper black color and brighter colors than most LCDs. The Tab S6 wins here.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

We didn't think most people used a scary tea tray to take pictures, but obviously we're wrong. Samsung claims that 86% of Tab S4 owners used their tablet camera every day, which means it takes the camera a little bit more seriously. This may be the reason why the Tab S6 has a dual lens kit consisting of a 13-megapixel lens and a 5-megapixel 123-degree wide angle lens. There is an 8-megapixel selfi-lens in front.

The iPad Air has only one 8-megapixel lens around the back and a 5-megapixel selfi lens. This is good enough, but it is not suitable for a good phone with a camera. But does it match the setting with the two lenses in the Tab S6? We can't announce it anyway.

Software and updates

iPad Air is currently running iOS 12, but will soon run on Apple's new iPadOS, which greatly improves the performance of your iPad, adds better support for multiple applications, a floating keyboard and more. The Galaxy Tab S6 runs on the latest version of Android 9.0 Pie, while the Samsung One UI runs on top. It's not as good for tablets as the iPadOS, but it's more than offset by the inclusion of a few special features we'll talk about later.

The choice between iOS and Android often comes down to personal preferences - but it's not a question of opinion that gets faster updates. IPad Air will receive new versions of iOS within days after they become available, while Samsung often takes more than six months to filter the new version of Android on its devices. The iPad wins with Apple's Update Schedule.

Special features

There's a lot of special opportunities here. iPad Air comes with ARKit support, Face ID, Apple Pencil and all the new features provided by iPadOS. But the winner is a Samsung tablet with Dex desktop mode, fingerprint scanner, S Pen and trackpad on the keyboard. These features really help make the Tab S6 look more like a laptop, and it's a real winner.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Absolute winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6

Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 comes first in most categories. It's a powerful and good-looking tablet with the right features that can be used as a tool to increase productivity and as a means of relaxation.

However, the Tab S6 tab is thin and can be easily overthrown by a number of factors. Don't you care about the trackpad keyboard or the included stylus? Then save money and take the Apple iPad Air instead of the basic Galaxy Tab S6. However, if the performance is a game and the money is not an object, then the Galaxy Tab S6 outperforms the iPad Air. However, the iPad Pro is yet to be considered, and the Galaxy Tab S6 will not be so easy to cope with.
