Sennheiser IE 80S BT review: the update of IE 80S

By  Fields Corrielus 2019-09-02 3255 0

Digital output and wireless output have become the standard of travel music. After repeated attempts in the Urbanite and Momentum series, Senheiser finally pushed the product line of the Audiophile (audio enthusiast) series onto the stage of wireless music headphones. The Senheiser IE 80s BT is the first product.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT: Sennheiser IE 80S wired earbud headphones

In fact, some time after the launch of the Senheiser IE 80s, some players have begun to look for ways to turn the IE 80s into wireless headphones. Because the headset unit itself is connected to the wire using a custom interface, the common mmcx port needs to be modified and customized before it can be compatible. Even so, third-party Bluetooth modification kits are still emerging one after another, and many products can be found in e-commerce.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT

You can understand the IE 80s BT as the wireless version of the IE 80s, in the headphone drive unit, shape, design has not made much change, is still a soft earplug body appearance, highly marked Sennheiser Logo metal panel and 5 low frequency adjustment knob.

As the Audiophile series positioning headphones, the IE 80s BT accessories are also very rich, silicone sleeve, two sets of sets, Comply sets are available in all three sizes, and comes with a small tool that can be used to remove the filter screen and low frequency knob adjustment.

Part of the battery and wireless module of the Senheiser IE 80s BT has been integrated into the neck design, and a similar design has appeared in the Senheiser HD1 neck Bluetooth headset, which supports Bluetooth 5.0 and has a built-in 120mAh battery. The duration of the voyage is about six hours.

In addition, the neck charging interface has also been upgraded to USB Type-C, which randomly does not provide chargers, but 5V 0.5A, that is, 2.5W chargers, can be easily powered by even laptops. The time to fill up again is about an hour and a half.

Compared with the Senheiser HD1 neck-mounted Bluetooth headset, the IE 80s BT is soft and flexible, making it easy to match the neck in daily use, and the total weight of 30 grams of headphones does not put pressure on the neck and back of the ear when worn for a long time.

The Bluetooth headset's three-button control button is arranged on the left side of the neck, and an additional voice assistant button is added to support Siri and Google Assistant, and is specifically separated from the three-button control button to ensure that you do not press the wrong button during blind exercise.

In the control area, there are also two all-pointing microphones with noise reduction technology to ensure that there is no interference when talking and talking to the voice assistant.

Because of the same interface, the Senheiser IE 80s unit is also fully compatible with the IE 80s BT neck, and the two can be perfectly integrated and even difficult to distinguish in appearance. Senheiser has also offered the IE 80s BT a recommendation for RCs IE cable control cables compatible with the IE 80s, turning the IE 80s BT into a wired headset. Therefore, in general, the IE 80s BT unit is roughly the same as the IE 80s.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT: sound quality is similar to the IE 80s.

In terms of parameters, the moving ring unit of the IE 80s has a sound pressure level of 116 decibels, and by the time the IE 80s BT becomes 110 decibels. At the same time, the maximum output power of the Bluetooth module of the IE 80s BT is 10MW, which is much lower than the 40mW power of the mobile phone based on sound quality. Even so, the IE 80s BT works well, and like the HDV 820 with the HD 820, Senheiser never stacks too much on the hardware, but ensures that all the hardware matches are just right. Yes, only Senheiser can know Senheiser.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT

In official terms, Senheiser has readjusted the unit to ensure that the IE 80s BT sound is better balanced and supports more personalized tuning. With the blessing of the wireless module, the IE 80s BT does have more adjustable space, in addition to the headphone 5 low frequency adjustment knob, through the Sennheiser Smart Control APP built-in equalizer, but also the IE 80s BT sound effects can be properly adjusted.

For better sound quality transmission, IE 80s BT provides SBC, aptX, aptX LL, aptX HD, AAC, LHDC encoders. In Android mobile phones, compatible encoder modes can be seen in Bluetooth transmission settings. At this point, we turn on aptX HD, and download audio content such as DSD128 5.6MHz 1bit audio with options such as Sony Select Hi-Res APP, to ensure that the IE 80s BT works in wireless mode.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT

On the whole, the IE 80s BT is still the flavor of the IE 80s. If the low frequency knob is adjusted to the highest level, combined with Comply memory sponge earplugs, you can really feel that the low frequency has been significantly enhanced, but there is no turbidity or vagueness. As always, it shows the same level of analytical power as the IE 80s.

Despite his stubborn balance of sound, Senheiser made the IE 80s BT more in line with the mainstream listening orientation, such as better voice resolution and better separation from musical instruments on the Taylor Swift "1989" album. High frequency is natural and has no sharp or rough feeling.

You can think of the Senheiser IE 80s BT as coming from the ear mask HD series, but because of physical limitations, the sound can not be opened, and the sound will eventually converge neatly and orderly in a 10mm diameter unit. Because of this, in the IE 80s BT, you will still hear a long stream of water similar to the IE 80s, worth chewing slowly. The usual sharp excesses and coarseness, such as surging, bombardment, or multi-unit moving iron, are not audible on the IE 80s BT.

Sennheiser IE 80S BT

It is not difficult to find that Senheiser has made frequent movements on consumer headphones in the past two years, first creating the true wireless headset Momentum Ture Wireless, which is widely regarded as the best sound quality so far. Then the stylish transparent headphones IE 400 Pro and IE 500 Pro once again opened the door to music. Senheiser has never been short of high-end headphones, but they need new products that are closer to the mainstream and used by young people, and the Senheiser IE 80s BT is one of them.

It is clear that Senheiser IE 80s BT has taken on the responsibility of leading the Senheiser Audiophile line to wireless audio. Its expressiveness is comparable to that of the IE 80s, and its low-frequency performance is slightly enhanced, essentially a wireless version of the IE 80s enhanced version. If Senheiser gets a taste of sales, the Senheiser IE 800s BT and the Senheiser IE 500Pro BT will suddenly appear one day in the future.

After all, the pursuit of good sound quality is not the exclusive privilege of Golden ears, and for young people with high spending power, once they understand what a Senheiser-style tri-band equilibrium is, there is no way to go back to accepting cheap wireless headphones.
