Single camera on iPhone XR vs. dual cameras on iPhone XS: which is better?

The iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max all have 12MP cameras with the same wide-angle lens, but the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max are equipped with an extra telephoto lens for portrait and zoom mode shooting.
In fact, the internal structure of the iPhone XR is the same as that of the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, including the A12 bionic processor, so the image quality of the 3 iPhones is almost the same under the wide-angle shooting.
Telephoto lens greatly improves the zoom quality
When you switch to the telephoto lens and zoom in the picture, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max start to embody their advantages. In the case of 2X optical zoom, it can be seen that there are obvious differences in detail and quality. Because the iPhone XR does not have a telephoto lens, it can only achieve 5X digital zoom. By contrast, the 10X optical and digital zoom on iPhone XS Max can provide more details. Maybe it's not a big problem for many people, but in many cases, providing a certain amount of extra zooming can really helpful, especially when taking pictures for animals.
When shooting videos, the iPhone XR just has 3X focus length, while it’s 6X on iPhone XS Max. As we know, shooting videos usually has a higher requirement than taking pictures, so the telephoto lens is very important for smartphones’ camera, especially when you want to take a good telephoto portrait picture.
Different shooting effect under the portrait mode
The iPhone XR is the only one smartphone that adopts wide-angle lens to take portrait pictures. Nevertheless, its effect is different from that of the iPhone XS Max, although both the two phones have the same functions of depth of field control and portrait lighting.
The biggest problem with the iPhone XR camera is that you can't take pictures of objects or non-human objects in portrait mode as you would on the iPhone XS Max. Despite that, the background compression and depth of field effect of the iPhone XS Max have also increased considerably, making the image look more pleasant and natural. That's exactly what you can do with the telephoto lens lens of the iPhone XS Max, which is not the case with the iPhone XR.
As we can see in the picture, the portrait shot with long focus lens looks more natural, and increased compression reduces the effect of background distraction.
iPhone XR’s portrait mode is better in the weak light environment
Although the camera of the iPhone XS is better in many ways, in fact, in some other aspects, the iPhone XR is also better than the iPhone XS. Our recent comprehensive comparison of the iPhone camera reveals that the telephoto lens performs worse in low-light environments because it has smaller aperture and fewer natural light entering.
Because the iPhone XS Max with dual cameras can only take portrait pictures with a telephoto lens, so the iPhone XR has more advantages than the iPhone XS Max in shooting portrait pictures under the low-light environment, making the photos look more beautiful and have less noise. This is certainly an advantage for the iPhone XR, but honestly speaking, taking photos in dark light environments is not common.
People who like taking pictures should choose iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max
According to DxOMark, the iPhone XR has become the best single-camera smartphone on the market, beating Google Pixel 3, which sells for $750.
Nevertheless, the overall camera performance on iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is undoubtedly more excellent. If photography is important to you, we recommend that you pay more for the iPhone XS.
