Test Huawei mate 20 spectacular autonomy

Ergonomics and design
With its 6.53-inch (16.59 cm diagonal) screen in the 18.7:9 format, the mate 20 imposes it. And despite its size, it takes advantage of Huawei's know-how. Because if it is hardly usable with one hand and rather heavy (188 g), the terminal can boast a pleasant ergonomics. Its lock and volume buttons fall naturally under the finger, just like its fingerprint sensor reagent, located on its carapace. Like his big brother, the mate 20 also offers a facial recognition unlock. Not as accurate as the mate 20 Pro, which has a battery of additional sensors, it does the trick in most cases. Because here, there is not enough space to multiply the sensors in the notch as this one is reduced to its minimum. Recalling the design of the OnePlus 6T, this sacrifice allows the slab to occupy 88.48% of the façade. On the back, the glass back does not support Wireless charging and unfortunately catches fingerprints too easily.
Capable of accommodating up to two Nano-SIM, the mate 20 proposes to use the second port to insert an NM card, the memory card format of Huawei. Up to 256 GB, these allow you to extend the 128 GB of available storage. Finally, where the majority of smartphones offered around the €800 are IP68 certified, the mate 20 only has a IP53 certification, i.e. partial protection against dust and splashing. A real flaw for a terminal of its standing.
The mate 20 features an IPS slab on its façade. An always bold choice for a Smartphone launched at €799. Fortunately it proves to be a good Bill. However, the slab remains a victim of IPS's shortcomings. Namely, an average contrast ratio (1:1356) and a slightly elevated remanence (17 Ms).
On the rest, the 6.53 inch screen does a good job. The Huawei overlay allows you to precisely set the color temperature of the slab. And that falls well because it shows itself too high with the factory settings. Following the approach presented on the catches below, we managed to flirt with the ideal temperature (6 500 K) by placing the thermometer at 6 515 K. An exemplary temperature. With these parameters, the average Delta E is also exemplary and is located at 3. He thus testifies of a faithful transcription of the colors, despite some little observed shades (red, yellow, green).
For use, the slab is just as effective. With a brightness ranging from 1.3 to 501 CD/m², it remains readable in any situation without ever dazzle the eyes. Especially since it has a fairly low reflectance (12%). No problem either in terms of resolution (381 DPI) since the display shows in FHD + (1 080 x 2 240 PX). She still suffers from a fairly high touch delay (91 MS).
In spite of a few limitations, the IPS screen of the mate 20 shows all the control of Huawei on the subject. Too bad, once again, to have to turn to the mate 20 Pro to enjoy the OLED.
Like the mate 20 Pro, the mate 20 incorporates the Kirin 980 chip, the latest Huawei SoC. A real war machine that chains the applications and juggles them with great ease. It is the same when launching a game. The Mali G70 MP10 chip allows the phone to offer graphics and a foolproof fluidity. A high-end experience.
Even after intensive use, the Smartphone does not heat that much and reaches only 33 °c after a long use of the camera.
If the mate 20 has a USB-C connection, it does not give up the 3.5 mm mini jack plug, which is present on the top of the Smartphone. And it proves to be of good quality. Its distortion is minimal, its dynamic range wide and its crosstalk well contained. One can regret, however, an output power too average to be perfect.
The mate 20 is equipped with two speakers. One on the lower slice and the other, on the opposite, on the upper slice. A layout designed to create a stereo sound... In theory. In practice, the second HP shows itself much less powerful than its pendant. So stereo is almost non-existent. Do not rely on Dolby Atmos mode, which is also non-existent.
Like the mate 20 Pro, this mate 20 offers on its back a triple photo sensor with a rectangle layout. Three cameras with focal equivalences of 17, 27 and 52 mm. All accompanied by a fluid application that gives access to many settings and whose software processing is a little ubiquitous.
Because this is the limit of the mate 20. Despite very detailed clichés, he suffers from this software treatment, too aggressive and difficult to understand. In addition to smoothing, it compensates for the loss of detail occasioned by forcing the emphasis and contrast. A funny combination that offers a final rendering away from reality. So it is a notch below the pixel 3, more natural.
At low brightness, the image processing continues to make hers. The clichés are clearly readable. However, smoothing gum the roughness necessary for realism. And the contrast, once again forced, does not fix anything. The rendering is here also below that of the competition.
At the front, the observation is the same. Within its small notch, the mate 20 features a module equipped with a 24 MP sensor and a lens opening at f/2. Its selfies are detailed, but spoiled by the smoothing of the skin. Even with the "beauty" mode disabled, it works by embellishing you, whether you want it or not.
If there is a point on which the mate 20 really stands out, it's about autonomy. Armed with a SoC Kirin 980 as well as a 4 000 mAh battery, the Smartphone has achieved a spectacular performance in our tests. Thus, our Smartvise test, which simulates a classic Smartphone activity with SMS sending, calls and playback of videos and music, has set 23h05 to exhaust the mate 20. A score never seen again on a high-end model. In real terms, this represents more than three days of autonomy. Something to be quiet about. Especially since it takes only about 1h30 to recharge the Terminal.
Interface & OS
In addition to Android pie and its new package, the mate 20 ships the Huawei superlayer, EMUI, in its latest version 9.0. Nothing to revolutionize the Android experience. The rank of fixed icons is present, like the application drawer, which must be activated in the settings. However, via EMUI 9.0, Huawei aggregates the settings for some additional controls. It is possible to clone applications to use them under different accounts, to replace the buttons with movements, but also to have better management of the slab or to set up a second Office, accessible for example by presenting a different pattern or fingerprint at the time of unlocking.
|Spectacular autonomy||But no OLED, despite the price.|
|A nice finish and ergonomics||Still too average photos.|
|A mini-jack output quality 3.5 mm above average||Limited sealing.|
|The EMUI 9.0 overcoat||A second speaker is useless.|
|Quality IPS slab||The proprietary format of the memory cards.|
e mate 20 stands out thanks to its spectacular autonomy that gives substance to this lost Smartphone between two ranges. Because if it is definitely a good Smartphone, it suffers only one handicap, its price (€799 at launch). Without OLED or sealing, with photos a notch below those of the pixel 3, the mate 20 is sold at the price of the mate 10 Pro in its time, a Smartphone that still possesses an OLED screen and an IP67 sealing. Only the mate 20 's autonomy allows him to stay alive in the battle of high-end smartphones and attract customers in search of a very long-lasting model.
