Last year, Yang Yuanqing announced at the 2018 Lenovo Tech World that “the world's first 5G ready mobile phone”- Moto Z3, needs to achieve 5G NR communication through an external 5G module. Recently, the Moto 5G module has been certified by FCC Telecom in the United States. It will be on the market soon, and more parameters will be exposed.

Surprisingly, the Moto 5G module is equipped with proximity sensors. Foreign media analysised that it may be due to the large radiation of 5G mmWave millimeter wave.

It is reported that the Moto 5G module will be equipped with the Snapdragon 855 platform, with a built-in X50 5G and X24 LTE baseband, as well as 5G and 4G connectivity. In addition, it has built-in 2000 mAh batteries to extend cell phone battery life.

One feature not previously disclosed is that the Moto 5G module will be equipped with proximity sensors, and four mmWave millimeter-wave antennas will be turned off before the user's face is close to the mobile phone to reduce the impact of radiation on the user. In addition, if the proximity sensor detects finger blocking antenna, 5G module will enhance antenna power to achieve better 5G signal receiving function.

Obviously, we already know that 5G mobile phones have more antennas and more power, so is millimeter wave radiation harmful to human body?


Is 5G millimeter wave radiation harmful?

As an indispensable transmission mode of 5G network, millimeter wave refers to electromagnetic wave with a wavelength of 1-10 mm and a wavelength of 30-300 GHz. Obviously, as long as it belongs to the category of electromagnetic radiation, rather than ionizing radiation, the impact on the human body is "harmless" and accurately "no known adverse health effects".


Authoritative scientific research institutions believe that there is no definite evidence that ionizing radiation can tear living cells and have adverse effects on human body at present; but in other words, there are certain regulations for the ionizing radiation generated by mobile phone antenna in the industry, which is no more than 2.0 SAR (electromagnetic wave absorption ratio), i.e. no more than 2.0 W/kg. Obviously, 5G millimeter wave current radiation has exceeded the standard, and users do have headaches when they spend a long time on their mobile phones, so the built-in proximity sensor in Moto 5G module is understandable.


In fact, Qualcomm's proposed 5G mobile phone is designed with four millimeter-wave antennas to improve the poor signal of 5G mobile phone. But mobile phones also have new CDRX technology, which sleeps antennas without 5G communication, reduces radiation and increases battery life.


Although the popularity of 5G mobile phones will take some time due to the technical characteristics, its radiation is bound to be greater than that of 4G mobile phones. It is hoped that mobile phone manufacturers can adopt a better design to reduce the potential risk of millimeter wave radiation.
