Toshiba Releases XG6-P NVMe SSD for Client and Data Center

Toshiba has announced a new variant of the XG6 client NVMESD: XG6-P, which adds a 2TB option to the series. Compared to the original XG6, the XG6-P did not bring any improvement. Although the XG6 and XG6-P are quite modern in their use of 96-layer 3D NAND, they still use the same controller as the XG5 series, and there doesn't seem to be much room for more performance from the chip. However, like XG5-P, XG6-P can provide some improvements to the unquantified use cases in the specification table, such as write performance after the SLC cache is filled.

XG6-P capacity up to 2TB, external dimensions M.2 2280, host interface PCIe 3.1 x4, protocol NVMe 1.3a, NAND flash memory using Toshiba 96L BiCS4 3D TLC, sequential read speed 3180MB / s, sequential write speed 2920MB / s, Random read performance of 355k IOPS, random write performance of 365k IOPS, read write power consumption <5 W, idle power consumption 3 mW.

Toshiba's XG Series SSDs are OEM-only products for high-end clients and entry-level data centers (such as server startup and logging), while the BG series covers more mainstream segments, and earlier this year. A major update was made through BG4. Since the conversion of XG3 to Toshiba OCZ RD400 in 2016, Toshiba has not released a retail version of the XG series. The XG5-P will begin sampling next month, so it should start appearing in laptops this fall.
