Xbox Project Scarlett will adopt AMD Flute CPU and Navi 10 Lite GPU

By  Goraud Mazanec 2019-07-25 2177 0

PS5 and Xbox Scarlett will use an APU consisting of a Zen 2 CPU, the architecture we've seen debuting on the Ryzen 3000 series, and a Navi GPU, based on the RDNA architecture that also debuted recently on the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT.

Thanks to the movements carried out by both Sony and Microsoft, we have a fairly precise vision of what we can expect from both consoles, but a recent leak has helped us to clear up some of the doubts we had about the specific specifications of that APU.

A few months ago we saw that the AMD Gonzalo APU had all the ballots to become the heart of PS5, and today an early listing in Userbenchmark points to AMD Flute as the equivalent for Microsoft's new generation console, Xbox Scarlett.

The information we have is clear, AMD Flute has a CPU with eight Zen 2 cores and supports SMT, which means it can handle up to sixteen threads. Its working speed is quite low, as it works at a base frequency of 1.6 GHz, but reaches 3.2 GHz in turbo mode. The L3 cache is just 4 MB per CCX unit, which confirms, overall, a considerable reduction in gross performance compared to the Ryzen 3000 series.

These specifications fit perfectly with the ones we saw when we talked about AMD Gonzalo, but what about the GPU? So everything seems to indicate that it will mount a graphics core based on Navi 10 Lite, the same GPU that we have seen in the Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT.

It is not clear what the "Lite" label means. Yes, it is an indication that it will be a less powerful version compared to the standard Navi 10 graphics kernel, but we have two great options:

● That it is a version with a slight cut at the shaders level and that is a little below the RX 5700 in raw power.

● AMD may also have chosen to keep the shader count and reduce the working frequencies to lower the consumption.

As for memory, we can assume that both Xbox Scarlett and PS5 will repeat the unified architecture we've seen in PS4 and Xbox One. According to this new filtration, Microsoft's new generation console will be equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, a significant improvement over the 12 GB of GDDR5 that Xbox One X brings.

We must bear in mind that one of the weakest points of the consoles of the current generation is the processor, so the mere fact of jumping to a chip based on Zen 2 already represent an important advance. This, coupled with the integration of a Radeon Navi GPU, the more memory available and the SSD NVME caching will allow a remarkable evolution, although less marked than the one we lived when the jump to PS3 and Xbox 360 took place.

The release of PS5 and Xbox Scarlett is expected by the end of 2020. Both consoles will be backward compatible with PS4 and Xbox One games, and will cost approximately $500.
