Now, let's jump into the details.
Xiaomi Mi 8 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: design
Highlights: 83.8% screen-to-body ratio (Mi 8), Camera notch (Mi 8)
Xiaomi have always been favoring bezel-less designs, especially in their latest phones. Neither the Mi 8 nor the Mi Mix 2S is an exception. Both phones sport an over 80% screen to body ratio but, as one would expect, the new model takes the bezel-less look a tad further.
The Mi 8 comes with an entirely new design detail for the the company — a notch at the top front panel housing the 20MP selfie shooter. Seen first on the iPhone X (and later repeated in several models like the Huawei P9), the notch gives the smartphone even more screen space and a very iPhone like resemblance in general.
The Explorer Edition of the Mi 8, however, truly stands out from the lineup with its transparent back panel — a beautiful design element making the phone truly one of its kind.

Xiaomi Mi 8 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: hardware & software
Highlights: Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 (both phones), 6GB RAM (both phones), MIUI 10 with AI elements (Mi 8)
Both the Xiaomi Mi 8 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 — a powerful chipset providing a good base for multitasking and working with a variety of apps and offering the ultimately smooth user experience.
Both devices come with 6GB of RAM and several internal storage options. The Mi 8, in particular, is available with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB (the price will rise accordingly) — your choice will be crucial here as the phone does not feature an SD card slot and its internal storage is non-expandable.
The Mi 8 comes with the latest version of the Xiaomi's custom operating system — the MIUI 10 (compared to the MIUI 9 on the Mi Mix 2S). One of the key upgrades in the new operating system is the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to increase operating speed. Based on your previous use and behavior patterns, the phone will try to predict which action you are going to take next and get the system ready. For instance, if you have just snapped a new photo, the phone will thoughtfully preload the Instagram app so that you can instantly share the pic — a feature that can potentially save you loads of time in the future.
Xiaomi Mi 8 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: cameras
Highlights: 12MP +12MP rear camera (both phones), 20MP selfie shooter (Mi 8)
Both phones come with 12.0MP + 12.0MP dual back cameras. But the Mi 8, once again, takes things up a notch (pun intended.).
First, you have a super powerful 20MP front camera, compared to just 5MP on the Mi Mix 2s.
Second, the Mi 8 makes full use of the latest developments in AI technology for its back cameras to offer its users stunning portraits, accurate scene detection and advanced video editing. Mi 8's rear camera has even received a 105 point score on DxOMark, putting it on the same level as the Galaxy S9 and just a bit below the Huawei P20.
Xiaomi Mi 8 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: GPS
GPS has been an indispensable function for our daily use. One of the most great upgrade on the Xiaomi Mi 8 is the enhanced GPS. The Mi 8 is the first smartphone in the world to adopt dual-frequency GPS, which supports both L1 and L5 dual frequency and dual channel positioning, resulting in up to 5 times higher positioning accuracy than that of the traditional single L1 frequency band. So you will never get lost with the Xiaomi Mi 8's dual-frequency GPS.
Xiaomi Mi 8 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: extras
There are quite a few things of note on the Mi 8 — especially the high-end Explorer Edition.
First and foremost, the Mi 8 Explorer is one of the first phones in the world to come with an in-display fingerprint sensor, which uses pressure sensitivity to unlock the device. In addition to that, you get to play with 3D facial recognition — in fact, according to Xiaomi, the Mi 8 is the first ever Android phone to use the same type of facial recognition tech as on the iPhone X. The experience is complete with an Animoji equivalent.

Xiaomi Mi 8 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S: wrapping things up
Xiaomi have proven themselves time and time again as the manufacturer of affordable high-end devices — and the Mi 8 seems to check off all the right boxes to be the company's new bestseller. Sporting many of the same features as the Mi Mix 2S, we can't really label it as a must-have upgrade. However, the Mi 8 Explorer's unique design, in-display fingerprint and 3D facial recognition are more than enough to spark curiosity — and we are sure a great number of users will not be able to resist the temptation.
