Xiaomi Fimi Palm features
The specifications for the Fimi Palm 3 are now known and make it quite interesting. Here you can read the key data in comparison to the Osmo.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Size
The Fimi Palm 3 measures 127 x 31 x 23 mm and thus plays pretty much in the same league as the Osmo Pocket (122 x 37 x 29 mm). I find the size of the Osmo Pocket very comfortable with my medium sized hands. So the Palm will be similar.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm weight
Also with the weight there are no big differences: While the original DJI weighs 116g, the Fimi Palm weighs 3 smooth 120g. The 4 grams don't really weigh much, so it's exactly the same.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm gimbal axes
As you probably already suspect, there are no differences here either. Both the Fimi Palm 3 and the Osmo Pocket offer full 3-axis stabilization for particularly smooth images.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Gimbal Modes
While the Osmo Pocket offers the programs "Follow", "Tilt Lock" and "First Person View", the Fimi Palm 3 offers another option to lock all axes. A conceivable use would be, if you want to bring some action into your picture material, similar to an action cam. These are then however mostly stabilized by software. How well this works and what this mode is suitable for has yet to be tried out.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm control
Here is one of the first big differences the Fimi Palm 3 wants to show off with. Because its small housing offers a 5-way joystick, as we know it from Osmo Mobile 2 Smartphone-Gimbal, for example. I'm really curious how well this works on this little device. It is not uncommon for me to connect the smartphone to the Osmo Pocket for gimbal movements alone, in order to be able to realize more beautiful movements with a display joystick.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Microphones and audio interface
When I criticize the Osmo Pocket, it's mostly because of the placement of the microphones, which takes getting used to. All the sadder that the Xiaomi developers have adopted this concept for the Fimi Palm 3. The microphone facing the user sits more or less right next to the control buttons and can easily be concealed while holding. It's annoying if you notice it during or after the recording. Meanwhile I can cope quite well with it, but at the beginning one or the other recording went into my pants.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Tracking and Active Track
Both gimbal cameras support Active Track, which is no big surprise. Since this is mainly a software feature, it remains to be seen how the Fimi Palm 3 will perform here. From the belly everyone will probably assume, also I, that the Osmo Pocket will keep the nose in front here first of all. DJI has gained a lot of experience over many years and always delivers very good quality with his apps. Whether the new challenger can score here remains to be seen.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Creative Modes
The Fimi Palm 3 already offers familiar features in the creative modes: Panorama, Time Lapse, Motion Lapse and Hyper Lapse are on board. We also know these modes from the DJI Osmo Pocket. There are supposed to be differences between slow-M0 and zoom modes. I have not yet been able to find out exactly what they look like. However, the Fimi is supposed to support 8x SlowMO.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Maximum resolution and frame rate
The Fimi Palm 3 can only operate 4k with 30 frames per second according to the present specification. The counterpart from DJI creates 60 frames, which can save recordings in bright sunlight or when things get a little faster. Certain motifs such as waves, for example, are always recorded at 60 frames per second so that I can play them back a little slower later. If the Fimi Palm 3 really only supports 30 FPS at 4k, this would be a serious limitation.
Both handheld gimbals have a 12 megapixel 1/2.3'' CMOS sensor.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Bit rate of the video stream
There's nothing here that would surprise. Like the Osmo Pocket, the Fimi Palm 3 supports a full 100 Mb/s video stream for 4k recordings.
Field of View - Viewing angle of the camera
The FoV of the Osmo Pocket is a pleasant 80 degrees. The viewing angle of the Fimi Palm 3, on the other hand, is 128 degrees, which corresponds to a much wider field of view. For comparison, the viewing angle of a GoPro Hero 7 at 4:3 without zoom is 122.6 degrees. Thus, the Filmi Palm 3 is more like an ActionCam on the road with all its advantages and disadvantages, which will probably play a decisive role in the purchase decision.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm display size
The display of the Fimi (1.22 inch, approx. 31 mm) is slightly larger than we know it from the touch screen of the Osmo Pocket (1.08 inch, approx. 27 mm). Four millimetres in the diagonal can definitely make a difference. Ultimately, however, both are small ads and I would be less interested in that.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Battery and runtime
DJI has given the Osmo Pocket an 875 mAh battery. The Fimi Palm 3, on the other hand, is rated at 1000 mAh. They surprise you with the runtime specifications. The DJI has specified a maximum running time of 140 minutes. Xiaomi praises his new handheld Gimbal with 240 minutes of movie time. That would be over an hour more and certainly a good criterion for the purchase. Whether that's really the case, I'd question it today. Certainly not with activated Bluetooth or WIFI, because that also needs electricity.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm interfaces
Like the Pocket, the Palm 3 has a USB-C interface as standard interface for data exchange and as loading port. Xiaomi also picked up on the criticism of the Osmo and directly installed a 3.5 mm jack connector for an external microphone. This makes the Palm 3 compatible to many and often existing accessories like the small rode microphone.
Also the Fimi Palm 3 has a standard thread for a tripod. I still haven't understood how DJI missed it, because the DJI Osmo Pocket is naked here and demands extra accessories.
Xiaomi Fimi Palm Price and Release
While the Osmo Pocket has meanwhile settled at about 320 Euro, the Fimi Palm 3 is supposed to start for about 200 Dollar. The new one from Xiaomi will be delivered in January. At Gearbest you can pre-order it at the moment and get it for special discount for about 150 dollars, half of it to Osmo Pocket. That's what I call a declaration of war.
