Xiaomi M365 electric scooter - safety comes first

By  Ingrid Wilhelmina 2017-06-07 3443 57

Like any other vehicles on the market, the Xiaomi M365 electric scooter comes loaded with safety features to make sure its drivers are safe on the road. But just as with a car or bicycle, you can never be too careful on city streets. So, let's take a closer look at Xiaomi scooter's safety features.

As more and more people get comfortable with the new ridables, we are sure to see more and more monowheels, hoverboards, smart bikes and electric scooters on the road. The Xiaomi M365 folding electric scooter is one of the latest arrivals but is quickly emerging as a bestseller thanks to its strong build quality, compact folding design, ease of use and convenience.

But in this post, we zero in on the scooter's safety features including the dual-brake system, headlight, warning tail light, skid-resistant inflatable tire, and the handlebar bell.

Dual-brake system

When it comes to the vehicle safety, the first thing we think of is the braking system.

While most electric scooters come with one brake, the Xiaomi M365 features a dual-brake system: front E-ABS anti-lock braking system and rear mechanical disc brake system. Thus, the braking time is shortened to 4 meters ensuring a safer ride. Another advantage comes with the front anti-lock braking system which prevents the wheels from locking even under hard braking or on surfaces with low friction like snow and wet roads. At the same time, anti-lock breaking system is efficient in making the scooter come to a halt quickly and helps to improve steering ability during braking.

Headlight

Lighting is another important safety feature. Both a headlight and tail light are essential for safe riding at night. Not all electric scooters come with a front light, but the Xiaomi M365 is equipped with a headlight located in the middle of the handlebar. With the high 1.1W brightness level and up to 6m beam distance, the headlight will light up the road ahead when riding in dim areas or at night time.

As far as I'm concerned, the one improvement that the headlight could use is adjustable brightness. The front light seems to be too harsh and would probably be blinding to other riders, creating a kind of “deer in the headlights” scenario.

Warning tail light

Just like the headlight can give you better visibility, a bright tail light can also make you more noticeable to others on the road, making you feel more secure - especially when riding in bad weather and at night. The light will turn on the moment you start the scooter and will flash when you brake, sending a warning to other drivers and pedestrians.

The tail light comes with the perfect brightness setting - almost invisible during day time and bright enough for people to see you on the road at night.

Inflatable tires

The M365 comes with front and rear inflatable tires featuring excellent performance of durability, skid resistance, and shock resistance. Whether you want to ride on a cement pavement, asphalt, a grassy road or gravel-filled road, you can do that easily. The scooter's tires can even handle stairs lower than 1cm and a trench up to 3cm in width.

Designed to offer a smooth and comfortable riding experience, the M365's inflatable tires are more shock resistant than solid tires. With that said, it's important to know that the inflatable tires are the only shock-resistant feature of Xiaomi's scooter. There is no comprehensive damping system, so the safer option is to slow down when crossing speed bumps, potholes, or uneven terrains on the road.

Handlebar bell

While having a bell on a bicycle is nothing out of the ordinary, it does come as a bit of a surprise on a scooter. The bell is right next to the handlebar and is actually a good way to alert pedestrians or other drivers of your presence. It was also nice to note that the sound of Xiaomi scooter's bell was much nicer than that we hear on bicycles.

Some of the other safety enhancing features on the Xiaomi M365 are the anti-skid pad, anti-slip rubber grip, and the BMS battery management system. However, there are a few things to watch out for as well:

-- the chassis on the bike are quite low, meaning that they are relatively easy to be damaged. So, pay extra caution when taking the bike up and down the stairs.

-- at only 43cm (17 inches) in width, the scooter's body is pretty narrow. So if you sway your body even slightly, you might run the risk of colliding with other riders or pedestrians or hitting other obstacles. It is thus preferable to ride the scooter on broader roads.

Overall, with its extensive set of safety features, the Xiaomi M365 is definitely a safe and reliable choice for short-distance travel in the city and suburbs.
