Xiaomi Mi Robot vacuum cleaner vs iRobot Roomba 980 vacuum cleaner: xiaomi will replace iRobot?

The iRobot Roomba 980, one of the most advanced vacuum cleaner on the market, has a tough competitor -- Xiaomi. After reviewing several of its functions we found that they share a number of similar aspects (mobile app, anti-tangle system, automatic return to the base of charge when the battery runs out or finish cleaning, intelligent navigation system with simultaneous visual location technology and mapping) and others in which we appreciate some substantial differences.

Battery

With respect to the material through which they operate, My Robot Vacuum batteries are lithium-ion batteries, while Roomba batteries use nickel-metalhydride.Both robots share a voltage of 14.4 V.

In terms of battery capacity, Xiaomi's robot is at the forefront of this terrain, given that its original battery has 5,200 mAh, which allows it to clean areas of up to 250 square meters for two and a half hours. However, Roomba's original XLife battery only admits 3,000 mAh, which gives it an autonomy of approximately two hours.

Design

Regarding the dimensions of the product, the existing differences are minimal. Perhaps most noteworthy is that the Roomba 980 robot is completely round, with a diameter of 35 cm, while Xiaomi's creation is slightly oval (38 cm long and 33 cm wide). Also, the Roomba vacuum cleaner is somewhat higher (9 cm) than its competitor (8 cm).

The weight is also not a significant data to decant the scale, although Mi Robot Vacuum is a little lighter (3.8 kg) than the 980 model of Roomba (3.928 kg).

Capacity

In the capacity we do find a differential factor, since the capacity of the Chinese robot is just 0.42 l, while the American tank has space for a total of 0.55 l.

Engine

The power of the electric motor of My Robot Vacuum reaches 1,800 Pa. On the contrary, Roomba 980 sees its suction power limited to 1.670 Pa.

Extra functions

In relation to noise emission there is no discussion that Xiaomi has positioned itself with a clear advantage. The Chinese robot has a function to regulate the noise, being able to choose between three modes (normal, quiet and active), with an average of between 66 and 70 dB. On the other hand, although the iRobot vacuum cleaner also allows to alter this aspect, reducing the noise by means of the Eco mode, it is considerably noisier, with an average of 78 dB.

When it comes to carpet cleaning, the Roomba 980 takes the cake here, thanks to its "carpet impeller" function which, when placed in automatic mode, activates the advanced Carpet Boost technology system, through which the vacuum robot is able to detect a carpet and increase its suction power by ten, resulting in a deeper cleaning.

Price

It's undoubtedly the most eye-catching aspect, as you can purchase Xiaomi's Robot Vacuum for approximately €250-400, while the iRobot Roomba 980 is not suitable for all pockets, as it's available for €900, approximately three times the price of its competitor. The decision on whether it's worth it to opt for the more expensive model or if you prefer to buy the low cost version is entirely up to you.
