Xiaomi MITU DIY Mobile Phone Control Robot is a self-assembled toy consisting of 978 parts. It features self-balancing system, smartphone remote control and the modular graphics programming. With 4 USB Type-C ports, it supports to connect sensors of infrared, ultrasound and color. The self-assembled robot is a very good educational toy for the kids over 10 years old, and also a great gift for mechanic fans or robot fans.
Now, let's get into the details.
The Xiaomi MITU DIY Robot: assembly
Once you open the box and see all the 978 robot parts, putting it all together may seem intimidating. We do recommend getting a team together for assembly: this will make things faster and, what's even more important, much more fun. We also suggest you free a day for the activity — or spread the workload over the week, as it could take up to ten hours (depending on your assembly skills).
If you've assembled any DIY project before, you probably already have your own system on how to structure the project. But here are a few things we've found helpful:
● Prepare several containers into which you can empty all the packets with the robot parts (this will save you plenty of time looking for a part that has rolled under the couch).
● Make sure you have set up a working area: give yourself enough space and change your position often.
● Keep the robot's battery charged.
Then, follow the steps in the manual — they are very detailed and provide all the guidance you might need. With the DIY kit being 100% Lego compatible — you can, theoretically, alter the design later on, add on pieces and elements and so on.
The Xiaomi MITU DIY Robot: control and performance
Once you've assembled the robot, turned it on and placed it on a surface, it will balance itself out into a standing position. We tried giving it a few pushes, but the MITU instantly straightens itself out — despite the fact it's only standing on two wheels.
Now, let's take a look at the controls.
Launch the app and, if the robot is on, it will automatically detect it. Now, you can try all of the controls — the robot responds to them pretty quickly and the app's interface is self-explainable. You see several quick actions you can perform, including "fire". The MITU comes with onboard audio and will imitate the sounds of gunfire as it rotates and "shoots" from the hip Rambo style.
In addition to tapping on the controls in the app, you can also use gyroscope control. Simply move your phone around the robot will move with it.
You can also use the app to plan a route for your new companion: simply draw "the way" in the app and watch the robot follow it. We should note here that the app comes with pretty basic route planning. The upside of this is that it's very easy to use. The downside: there is no scaling, so when you draw "a road" for the robot that is, say, 2 centimeters long, you will need to guess how long the robot will actually travel for.
The speed with which the robot moves is not that fast — so it's probably not a racing setup, but then again, it is balancing on two wheels and makes up for the lack of speed with accuracy of movement.
Now for the technical details. The robot uses the STM32 with the maximum frequency of 72MHz and comes with the 1700mAh LiPo battery included in the package. Once again, with the robot being Lego compatible, you can also work on adding extra functionality by attaching ultrasonic sensors, infrared sensors and so on (the sensors do not come included with the robot).
If we had to describe the Xiaomi MITU with one word, we'd say it's FUN. Yes, the DIY robot is definitely loads of fun and, despite the recommended age on the box, we believe it will be just as fun for adults as it is for kids.
Make no mistake — the assembly will take time — and quite a lot of it. But you can spin this in your favor and make putting the robot together into a fun family project or "something different" you can do with friends.
As for the functionality, the self-balancing is what makes the MITU special and really interesting to watch. Other features are also fun to play around with — but, as we've mentioned earlier, pretty basic.
Now for the best part. You can get the Xiaomi MITU DIY Robot on GearBest for just $122.03 — and for this price, it's a real deal — especially when you take into account the pricey alternatives on the market.
