Xiaomi Mix 3: all-screen slider display, no notch and the promise of 10GB RAM and 5G support

By  GB Blog Official 2018-10-26 3875 1

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 had received quite a bit of publicity before it even hit the market in China yesterday. The new phone supporting the company's first sliding display and coming with bold promises of future upgrades of 10GB of RAM and 5G connectivity is surely something to talk about. And that’s exactly what we are going to do.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: sliding screen and an impressive over 90% screen-to-body ratio

The Mi Mix series have always been Xiaomi's pioneer line when it came to full screen displays. Yet, this time, the company has embarked on a new journey with the Mi Mix 3 featuring a sliding screen design and managing to make most of the phone's front real estate a display.

However, the company takes a slightly different approach to the Oppo Find X and the Vivo Nex and, instead of mechanising the process, uses a manual slider, thus enabling a satisfying tactile interaction with the phone.

With the 93.4% screen-to-body ratio, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has surely got incredibly close to make itself all-screen. But what does the display have to offer by itself? The Mi Mix 3 comes with 6.39-inch 2340 x 1080 AMOLED display. Enhanced with 600-nit brightness and 103.8-percent NTSC gamut, the screen looks great even outdoors and even in bright sunlight. That said, it would definitely be nice to have a higher resolution on a display of size — but maybe that's something we will see in the next Mi Max.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: Snapdragon 845 + 6GB of RAM

On the inside, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 continues to impress. You get the speedy Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chipset and at least 6GB of RAM to accompany it with. Plus, the Mi Mix 3 supports up to 256GB of storage. Basically, you get all the components you need for a flagship media phone — just like Xiaomi intended.

On the battery side, you have the 3,200 mAh battery paired with quick charge 4.0+. The phone also supports 10W wireless charging and you get the pleasant surprise of the charger being included in the box.

Following the growing trend among flagships, the Mi Mix 3 does not come with a headphone jack. Instead, you get the USB type-C port to handle most of your wired connectivity. The fact the USB type-C adapter is also included with the phone is definitely a nice touch.

The one place where the Mi Mix 3 has remained classic is the rear fingerprint sensor — unlike other recent releases sporting in-display fingerprint sensors. While the latter are surely a fun feature to try out, with many users reporting unstable performance with in-display sensors, this may well be for the better.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3: camera features

With the cameras getting their own space on the Mi Mix 3, you are probably expecting the performance to match the innovative design. And there are no disappointments here.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 has two dual cameras: the rear cam has a 12MP Sony IMX363 image sensor with large 1.4µm pixels and dual pixel autofocus. The lens features an f/1.8 aperture and 4-axis optical image stabilization. The other cam sports a 2x telephoto lens and uses a 12MP sensor with 1.0µm pixels. Thanks to the improved image processing, you do get better pictures with the Mi Max 3 compared to the Mi Max 2S. The night mode produces better results as well — less blur and smoother videos.

On the front, the Mi Max 3 sports another dual cam: the main module is 24MP with 0.9µm pixels and the support for 4-in-1 pixel binning. There's also a 2MP depth sensor for creating beautiful bokehs.

Xiaomi Mix 3: the verdict

We all know Xiaomi for making high quality affordable mid-range phones. But with the Mi Max 3, we may just be witnessing the birth of a new Xiaomi — the flagship maker. The company has definitely pushed the boundaries of its comfort zone with this new release — and promises to keep doing so further. The upgraded version if the Mi Max 3 scheduled to appear on the market next year, will come with 10GB of RAM and 5G connectivity.
