Look and Feel
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a premium metal body and is slimmer (8.3mm) as compared to its predecessor. It has slim tapered edges that are 5mm at its thinnest point. For a 5.5 inch device, I feel that it is reasonably compact and if you are looking for single-handed usage, there should not be any problem. I personally can scroll through the images and social media applications on my phone with a single hand.
The capacitive keys are placed just below the display and are extremely responsive and easy to use. At the bottom, you can find the primary microphone, USB slot, and the speaker grilles. The in-built speaker grilles are great and offer crisp and nice audio. However, I would have been more satisfied with a dual speaker option that is missing in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.
It has a fingerprint sensor at the back of the device, below the camera. The fingerprint scanner is very responsive and unlocks the phone within a second of touch. I really liked the fingerprint sensor technology, as it provides my mobile device an added layer of security and privacy to my personal data stored within the cell phone. Another thing that I personally like in Redmi Note 4, is the 3.5mm headphone jack. If you are an avid gamer or love to watch movies and shows, I believe 3.5mm jack is a necessity.
The Redmi Note 4 runs MIUI 8 that is based on Android 6.0.1, Marshmallow. It offers plenty of new features including the “Now on Tap” that can be triggered anytime, in any app, by simply long pressing the home button.
It also offers a newly designed gallery app, which you can use to automatically store and sync photos on your device with the MI cloud services. I have synced my photos with the cloud. You even get 5GB of free storage space, when you create an account. Another feature that I absolutely like is dual apps. Using the feature, you can create two instances of the same apps on your mobile device.
Xiaomi comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC processor. This processor comes with a 14nm FinFet technology that means it has 14nm transistors. As a result of this, the device has better efficiency and power management.
The FinFet technology used to ensure that the device does not get too hot because of extensive use and gaming. I personally never had to face the overheating issue in my Redmi Note 4 device. I am able to play games subway surfer and temple run without any performance issues. I even had fun playing resources heavy games like Asphalt 8 on the device and without no troubles at all.
You can easily multitask on the mobile phone and I felt no delays while launching the apps on it. The device includes 4100 mAh battery that is good enough to last over a day on a single charge. I use the device intensively right throughout the day and even then the device last easily, without any need to charge it again on the same day.
If you are someone who likes to scroll through the social media pages, photos and news with a few hours of gaming, the device can easily last through the day, without you being worried about the low battery. The only thing disappointing about the battery is that it takes too much time to get fully charged. I suppose USB Type-C fast charging could have solved that problem for faster charging time.
I was once able to watch two movies in a row without any battery issues. This means that you can easily have 5 - 6 hours of uninterrupted screen time with a single charge. In addition to this, because of the amazing IPS display, you can even watch high-resolution videos on your devices. The speakers are adequately loud and I don’t find any distortion in noise at higher volume levels.
It comes with Full HD display having a resolution of 1080 x 1920. The touch response is excellent and even the display of the device feels premium. The display offers strikingly vibrant colors. However, the visibility is below par and the screen appears to be dim in the sunlight.
Even the auto-brightness is below par. It misjudges the ambient light, as a result of which turns too bright when in the dark and too dim when indoors. I personally feel it is better if you manage and adjust the brightness level by yourself manually.
After all, you get a colorful display that provides warm color tones and functional sunlight visibility.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a 13 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and auto-focus. The front camera is 5 MP and works well for me. I personally felt that the front camera was decent enough to take selfies for social media posts. It offers good details and colors. However, the selfie taken in good light conditions were far better than those in low light conditions.
With the back camera, you can take a crisp photo with autofocus doing a good job of focusing on the object quickly. You can use the camera in different modes like Panorama, Beautify and Manual. For the scene mode, you get the ability to choose from different options like landscape, night, beach, now, flowers, portrait and night portrait. I also like the filters that can be applied while the images are clicked.
You can even shoot high-resolution videos with the rear camera. I liked the overall quality of the photos and videos that I took from my camera. You can have good quality images even in low light with the rear camera of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4.
Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 is an affordable smartphone device that has plenty to offer, from excellent processor to longer battery life. If you are looking for a big screen mobile device that has an excellent display, camera, and performance, Redmi Note 4 does not disappoint me. However, I feel that Xiaomi could have done better by providing a USB Type-C interface, dual speakers, and NFC connectivity.
